Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection NUR 405 October 27. 2014 Windshield Survey Summary and Reflection Newburgh, New York is a community located approximately ninety minutes north of New York City and near the scenic Hudson River. In 2013, the population was 28,871 with an average age of 29 years old (“Newburgh, NY demographics”, 2014). The city is frequently in the local news, very rarely for good things, and most commonly for the increased crime rates. This area is interesting because the outskirts of the town are affluent with parks, large shopping centers and restaurants, large and beautifully maintained homes, farms, and medical centers with access to primary care providers and specialist. Once main intersections are crossed it becomes obvious that you are in the heart of the community that the J family lives within. Many of the markets and small business in the main area have signs in Spanish and many people observed in the community are speaking Spanish. The J family is Caucasian and are considered a minority in this area. They will have interactions with shop owners that they are not always able to communicate with; this causes them to be in a vulnerable position. The children and young adults in this community are also vulnerable to decreased personal safety, lack of space to play and exercise, limited access to healthy fresh foods, and limited access to medical and dental care. The high crime rates make it difficult for Mr. & Mrs. J to allow their young children outside to play, and transportation restrictions create difficulties for obtaining healthy and fresh foods.
