Steroids have been a huge contributing factor for colleges athletes and professional athletes around the world. Steroids have ruined careers of many talented players that took the risky step to use performance enhancing drugs, and it got them kicked out of the league with serious consequences. Young athletes fall under the pressure of coaches and fans expecting them to perform at the top level all the time and wanting them to be the best out there. Athletes go through slumps in their career every year and will do anything to start performing again. “What is the ultimate good or moral value? What is the fundamental moral principle? What, in general, determines that an individual/action is moral? What, in particular, determines that an action is moral?”(Anonymous, 2010). Performance enhancing drugs are taken by an athlete that is competing with others, the individual is known to have committed an immoral action. It is an immoral action, because society is structured around fairness and equality and for every athlete to follow certain rules. When an individual breaks a rule, society makes an opinion on their actions by the standards of society if the action was wrong or right. The term “Deontology” which is when an action is viewed morally correct or wrong if they deal with the rules or standards. In a Deontology perspective this would be immoral because the player has violated the rules and standards of their contract. People want to follow rules to make moral decisions, but the reward may out way the consequence. Consequentialism is when a decision is made if the oneself feels that the action out ways the consequence. An athlete would think performing at the max for a year and getting the fame would be more important rather than the consequence; it could be the other way around also. When a player takes steroids he or she would rather take the risk for strength and skills, rather than worrying about future consequences. Also, applied ethics is the in-between of meta-ethics and normative ethics. Performance enhancing drugs are permissible to athletes that are medically prescribed and need the substance. These drugs are not permitted when they are used to gain strength in competition or to have an advantage over a competitor. Athletes are obligated by fans with pressure and feel the need to get better at their sport and will do what ever it takes to make the fans happy. Athletes that have taken steroids have been suspended or kicked out of the league. A lot of athletes have had their records removed from the league, for testing positive for steroids. Famous baseball players that were stars and tested positive for these drugs, have been kicked off teams and never signed again. An example of a great athlete that tested positive for Performance enhancing drugs is A-rod. He is one of the best power hitters in the MLB and now he is suffering a 163 game suspension.
