But consumers aren't helping their fellow countryman earn his own living by buying these imported items. Consumers are giving their hard-earned money to Walmart to go back to China to buy more items. (Smith & Young, 2004). Walmart has created new jobs for people when they open new stores, but they are underpaid jobs. Many of the positions are part-time, therefore, they are positions without benefits.
Ethical Issues in Business - Objective 310.2.1-05 Evaluation It is clear that Company Q has protected its shareholders investments as well as the company’s profits by closing failing stores in high-crime areas which were consistently losing money. However, there are many areas in which Company Q has not lived up to their ethical duty to be social responsible, by failing to have a positive effect and not making attempts to decrease their negative effect on society. The lack of response to consistent customer requests for more healthconscience and organic products demonstrated a complete disinterest in their community’s health, customer satisfaction, and consequently return business. Lack of return business creates revenue loss, and affects both the business and the shareholders. When the requested products were finally available in the stores, the prices of the products were very high and the product variety was extremely limited.
What institutions did the Immigration Committee seem most concerned about? The committee was obviously most worried about the factory and mining industry, they stated repeatedly how the Chinese would work too cheap compared to what the “white men” could live on. They were worried about the Chinese being unclean and working in our food services and also contaminating the cities. Why does the report mention the “vegetable” diets of the Chinese? They state this to try to show how the Chinese refuse to assimilate.
Technically, China does have some laws against taking bribes but there is a fine line between bribes and gift giving. It is an acceptable practice to give gifts to the officials that a company works with because it shows respect and that you value their friendship. The problem is that the gifts are becoming more and more expense to ensure the company gets everything that is needed to open a division in their country. The Chinese government is getting more aggressive with cracking down on officials taking bribes in order to fast track business licenses, but there is still a long way to go. According to FCPA, it is illegal in the United States to bribe or accept a bribe in return for favors, and most statewide business will abide by these laws.
The largest problem with currency was that each state printed there own money. Different merchants from each state couldn’t trade with each other, for the money they would be trading would mean nothing in their home state. This also made the national currency almost worthless. The government also had money problems as they were not allowed to tax the people. This brought great debt on the nation’s government.
Unfortunately when E-bay began to move into the Asia Market from Japan things began to turn for E-Bay with missing the window of opportunity. The questions became… For a vast amount of individuals the question still remains, “Why does E- Bay have problems in its Asian Market (Module 1 case)?” How can a global company that has made $4.6 billion struggle in Asian Market (Business Week)?” For some of individuals their answer would be because the Asian Market does not want us there, for many others individuals they consider, it’s just poor business management. Can both of these groups be right? Yes, they are both correct to a point. E-Bay was founded in the United States of America in 1995 and according to The Journal of Brand Management; a country can become a brand as well as there is an impact of country names on attitudes
However, as mentioned in the case, “senior management had not felt respected by their US headquarters, which had not given them enough autonomy and had directed the from afar instead”, it seemed like as time progressed, Ebay started taking too much control over the company without fully learning the consumer behaviors, nor the significance of cultural differences between China and United States. For example, the DIY culture in the West was not well adapted in China as the Chinese customers preferred the finished products that they don’t have to worry about putting the components together. Ebay was solely operating under the assumption that the Chinese people would prefer it just because its brand image in the United States, therefore it made very little modifications that adjust itself to Chinese consumers’ preferences. As a result of that, it lost market shares to
Adler College Gurabo, PR U. S. History Essay I Angel R. Pérez 11-1 Professor Ruiz August 27, 2013 The opening to China 1839 – 1844 The opening to China symbolized the U. S.’s attempts to expand westward. The opening itself was very dissimilar to the Japanese, since the Chinese were willing to do so. But it wasn’t only the Americans, the British and other European powers sought China for products because of their great deal of products to choose from. The Chinese on the other hand, were getting less interested in western products as westerners to Chinese products. This disinterest led to a chain of events that led the U. S. to gaining power in China.
Chrstopherson, (2007) proclaims the company failed at its attempt to place stores in Germany because Wal-Mart failed to adapt to the strategies and regulations of the German government. The United States business plan the company was using in other locations was not congruent with the laws, regulations, and society of Germany (Christopherson, 2007). Organizations such as Wal-Mart have to be mindful of the many hardships imposed by the political and legal systems of government in countries abroad suggest Daniels, Radenbaugh, & Sullivan, (2011). It is believed that most overseas countries do not ascertain the same political, economic, and cultural beliefs as Americans (Daniels, Radenbaugh, & Sullivan, 2011) and for this Wal-Mart would face similar problems when trying to start markets in both China and South Korea. While diversity is built in the Wal-Mart culture of business the locals of South Korea did not agree with the taste or style of western merchandise proclaims David Schwartz, Chief Executive Officer of Productive Environment Inc., (2004).
America began on small businesses and America has to continue to have small businesses to have a good economy. Wal-Mart endangers businesses all over the country because small businesses cannot compete with the superpower on account of Wal-Mart getting goods from places like China. Most people live within thirty minutes of a Wal-Mart and with their lower prices people will continue to shop there without realizing what they are doing to their own economy. Most people don’t realize that saving a few dollars by shopping at Wal-Mart is crippling all the local businesses around their area. Wal-Mart does not care about the American economy because they are thriving the way the economy is now, so American citizens have to stand up for their communities.
