I think it makes them feel better about themselves. Another reason is that you can see yourself in the joke a little bit. I think of comedians that joke about racial issues, sexual preference, or appearance. Most of the time that comedian is represented in that joke. My thought goes immediately to Chris Rock who jokes about black people, or Gabriel Iglesias who jokes about Mexicans and overweight people, who he likes to call fluffy.
How does Shakespeare successfully create comedy in Act 1 of Twelfth Night? Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night takes place during celebrations when the social hierarchy seems to be nearing towards non-existent and rankings seem to be overrun by excess partying. Tricking each other and speaking in puns was common at this time meaning Shakespeare could easily incorporate humour into the play. Through physical comedy, wit and wordplay and the use of dramatic irony, Shakespeare brings out the elements of comedy to the audience, keeping them entertained throughout. In Act 1 Scene 1 we are introduced to the Duke, Curio and Valentine.
However, the characterization the Luhrmann’s movie is off compared to Zeffirelli’s. Mercutio is again a comedian, aided with the precautious Benvolio on his side, but Mercutio could be considered more serious and aggressive when he says “Consort? What, dost thou make us minstrels? An’ thou make minstrels of us, look to hear nothing but discords. Here’s my fiddlestick; here’s that shall make you dance.
All of these things make him a very comical character enjoyed by the audience during Shakespearian times and in the present day. To begin, compared to Feste Andrew is the real fool. Fetse plays the role of the fool in Twelfth Night. In the play he is hired by Olivia to be the jester and entertain her. His name even means “the fool”.
In the Clown Punk the imagery, “the deflated face...” the Narrator uses descriptive language for the reader to picture what this ‘Clown Punk’ could look like this is underline by the use of the word ‘deflated ’this is a real feel of ‘Clown Punk’ and gives the reader some sympathy toward him. In
Because people are making fun of his nose he is able to provide witty humor that makes the book become a comedy. Valvert says “Ah…your nose…hem!...Your nose is…rather large!” “Rather” “Oh well” “Is that all” “Well of course.”(35-36 Act 1) But Cyrano does not leave it like this he replies by insulting Valvert and ultimately making him angry by telling him all the better insults that he could have had. He threw it right back in his face by making it a joke. Throughout the story comedy like this occurs and that is why I believe it is a
“No one speaks English anymore…you bastards,” croons the singer, melodically and gruffly simultaneously. Well some people referred to him as a singer at different points in his career. Growler, howler, melody-vomiteer, waste of talent; those were among other nomenclatures aimed at Vern Templeton, the sad sap slouching half behind the piano and half holding himself up with the cheap whiskey glass. The Yonder Light, a velvet and mahogany adorned bar attached to the Morning Star Hotel and Suites like God probably attached testicles to man before sending him down the chute to the world; this was the only place that would still book Vern on a regular basis. In town alone he had burned every talent booker and agent that ever gave him a sniff
It has been theorized for many years that Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible is based on historical facts of Miller’s time, including the famous McCarthyism “witch hunt.” Miller also included many of his own personal experiences, including, authors who inspired him, his personal infatuation with the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, troubles with his wife and his own communist leanings. Arthur Miller’s writing career started in the late 1930s. In Miller’s early life it was noted that he was not very good in school, nor did he care to be (Unger 146). It is further noted in an article about Miller in American Writers that “Miller was such a poor student that, although his Higginbotham 2 teachers looked him up in their records after he had become a notable playwright, none of them could actually remember him.” Even though Miller was not a devout student there was a
Although, Shakespeare must have still been brooding in late 1600 and early 1601, when he sat down to write a tragedy whose doomed hero bore the name of his dead son. The death of his son was a crisis of mourning and memory—could have caused a mental disturbance that helps to explain the explosive power and inwardness of Hamlet. There were constant outbreaks of the Bubonic Plague and every time this occurred the theatres were shut down. This eventually sent Shakespeare away from the diesese infected areas. Shakespeare may have never been infected with the Bubonic Plague but almost every aspect of life was affected by this plague.
Seinfeld Comedy is a form of art that makes people laugh. But why do people laugh at a situation or jokes? The episodes of Seinfeld were extremely successful in capturing moments of ordinary life and allowing the audience to connect in some way to their situations. The episodes allowed the audience to laugh at the character’s embarrassing gestures and actions. We compare our actions to those of Jerry’s, George’s or Kramer’s to what we would do in our lives.
