Sarah jackson 12/13/2010 Ms. Heilman This essay "A Letter to America," by Margaret Atwood had a creative format in which it was written as a letter for the authorities. And ordinary citizens of America to demonstrate that at one point in our history we had ideals about a fair nation of peace and freedom. But somehow has lost its way, and become too involved in our military and engaged in much political and business fraud. In this sense Atwood describes she is embarrassed with what America has done especially because many people and countries have aspired to American ideals. This article also reminded me of Churchill's essay in which America has the tendency to "[...] grab stuff other people produce, at our gunboat-diplomacy prices[...]" (5) or "gutting the Constitution" (5),meaning underhandedly putting aside the private rights of citizens in order to so called keep the nation "safe".
When we fail to grant equality to all, that makes news – bad news – for America all over the world. This is not the type of rhetoric the history books talk about when discussing the Civil Rights – and yet here it is, in front of our faces. There is also the phrase “The whole world is watching us.” This was
In Malcolm X the “Ballot or the Bullet”, and Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream”, they both felt that they have been cheated by the American System. They both felt that they were not treated like the Americans that this so called great country has made it out to be. Even though they had the same belief system and they both did not see eye to eye on most things, they still had a
Many people believe that racial profiling should be prohibited because it is offensive to American values. Malkin disputes this and insists that, “…the ethnic activists and civil-liberties groups who object most strenuously to the use of racial, ethnic, religious, and nationality classifications during war support the use of similar classifications to ensure ‘diversity’ or ‘parity’ in peacetime.” (493). However, Iftikhar strongly disagrees and believes that, “the most disturbing legal trend in America has been the growing disparity in how American Muslims are treated under the law.” She explains how the reports of civil rights cases, a majority of which were Muslim hate crimes, have increased tremendously since the 9/11 attacks due to racial profiling. Many Muslims were accused of crimes they didn’t do and were treated awful. While Iftikhar understands that America is focused on keeping everyone happy and winning over people abroad, she strongly states in her piece that, “it is high time that the Bush administration try spreading a little American democracy here---while winning the hearts and minds of Americans by treating all people equally under the law.” (497).
It’s cause they want to become something that shows pride and honor, an American. Along with the name come a number of different benefits such as freedom of speech to express your own opinion, freedom of religion and equality for all, including different sexes, races, religions and status. Being an American means much more than living in the United States. I am very proud of my privileges as an American because many other countries are not fortunate enough to have all these freedoms. Our freedoms are what set American’s apart from other countries.
ImperialismOsama bin laden and his followers charged another thing on United Status that the UnitedStates is using his power in the countries where it has military occupation formerly and thegovernments of these countries are alike puppets for it.They also blame that the United States unseat the government who turn against it and denyaccepting his order. There may be others factors about it that why Bin Laden do not like America or hate it. It can bestate that until unless these factors are present the issue of terrorism and insurgency is difficultto resolve. It is also seem that it is difficult to bring any improvement in the politicalcircumstances in the Middle East without resolving such
Primarily, it is clearly geared towards its receiving audience, namely well-to-do traditional American families. As a result, it definitely holds a biased position that requires it to appeal to its readers and pander to popular opinions beyond simply informing the general public of newsworthy events regarding the war. The second document also exhibits bias, although of a completely different sort. This underground newspaper promotes radically different, liberal, anti-war ideas and is obviously not geared towards ameliorating its professional image or really pandering to its audience. Its unofficial status makes it less put together while perhaps ensuring greater freedom of information.
Name: University: Course: Tutor: Date: Obama bad for America Introduction It would be good to begin with stating that no president is perfect and therefore at any present time there will be critics of the present, after all, not all voted for the said president. However Obama is getting more than his share of blame as a president. It could be that the failure of Obama administration results from the fact that he took over an ailing state from the damages created by the Bush administration but also some of the policies and moves of the administration portrays Obama as one of the most naïve and ignorant American. In this essay, some of the things that make Obama a bad president are assessed and evaluated. Health
Many American citizens in 1959 viewed the Vietnam War as a righteous battle against communism, similar to the Iraq War today however now many view this war as a necessary battle against terrorism. Looking at America's overall goal in Vietnam, it is evident that we did not come close to keeping South Vietnam from collapsing, who fell to communist rule in 1975 (Frankum 210). America's involvement in the conflicts of Vietnam and Iraq were so discordant that our government, people, and military were constricted. Yet both wars were fought with the knowledge that America may change the invaded nation, which brings a precarious question; what makes the government believe that they have the right to go into a country and change it to the way they
This is the 'melting pot' theory that everyone brings a little piece of the homeland culture with them which over time become adopted into American culture as well. From traditions to new words formed from a combination of languages. The words start as 'slang' but are eventually recognized nationwide and are adopted into the dictionary. The American mindset can be startling to some. We have a strong sense of individuality.
