What it means to be an American There are many different opinions and views on what it means to be an American. Each person believes something different on the subject. I have a different opinion from then kid who sits next to me. Some of the songs were patriotic and others were the complete opposite. The seminar was very opinionated by all who talked. The songs have different opinions about America and the seminar was informative on what other people around me believe the stereotypical American is like and what they think of what our country does. Some of the songs we herd in class were very patriotic in my opinion. “Proud to be an American” is an example of a patriotic song. When Lee Greenwood sings, “I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free.” , he is saying that being free is what he believes it means to be am American. In “Have You Forgotten,” Darryl Worley believes that America has forgotten what happened on 9/11. “Imagine”, by John Lennon is not very patriotic but it is about peace which is partly what I believe America stands for. The song describes a peace that is impossible to achieve today, but maybe one day we can come close to it. The other songs were not so patriotic. Green Days song, “American Idiot,” is any thing but patriotic. They disagree and continually restate that they disagree with commercialism and the medias hold on America and the dreams that Americans have. This is clearly stated in the lines, “…Under the new media…” “…Television dreams of tomorrow” “…Now everybody do the propaganda” “…One nation controlled by the media.” The song “Amerika,” by Rammstein is against America in my opinion. It seems to me that they focus on the materialism that we have here in America and how we spread it all around the world where we influence.
