Vulnerable Populations Jamie Laurson BSHS302 University of phoenix Introduction This paper will address the problem of homelessness in the United States. The rate of homelessness began to increase between 1970 and 1980 due to a decrease in affordable housing and an increase in poverty (National Coalition for the Homeless, 2005). How do people become vulnerable to homelessness and homeless situations in their lives? What can we do about it as oppose to what we have already done. Why are some minorities more prone to homelessness than others? These are the questions that may be in the mind of any caring individual as they encounter someone less fortunate then themselves. Vulnerable Populations One can trace homelessness as far back in history as prehistoric times and biblical periods. The need for housing or lack thereof is has proven to be an ever increasing dilemma in today’s society. I choose homelessness for my topic because it is something that even I had to experience at one point in my life. The federal government defines homelessness as an individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence; and an individual who has a primary nighttime residence that is supervised publicly or privately operated shelter designed to provide temporary living accommodations (Martin M, 2007). This definition is for the most part excluding the numerous homeless individual that refuse to live in the shelter systems and take their refuge on the streets. In the 16 and 1700’s many families suffered homelessness due to the war. Children were left without responsible parents and society seemed to disregard what they passed by in the streets. Children who were without became a normal thing to see, even as their count grew in numbers. In our society today the reasons for homelessness vary by
