It is estimated that “at least 2.3 million adults and children, or nearly 1 percent of the U.S. population, are likely to experience a spell of homelessness at least once during a year,” (Brown & Shukla, 2000, para. 1) The National Alliance to End Homelessness (2007b) lists “poverty, lack of affordable housing, poor access to support networks, and personal characteristics” as the most common predictors of homelessness. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, anywhere from 16% to 22% of homeless individuals suffer from a mental illness, (2008c, para. 1). “Homeless people with mental disorders remain homeless for longer periods of time and have less contact with family and friends,” and therefore are at higher risk for becoming chronically homeless. (National Coalition for the Homeless, 2008c, para. 3) National reports estimate that veterans compose between 24% to 40% of the homeless population. Many of these veterans are homeless due to the general causes of homeless, but it is believed that an additional reason is due to the long-term effects of untreated Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (National Coalition for Homeless, 2008b). Although the majority of homeless individuals are men, women and children are becoming homeless at a disturbing increasing rate. Some of the general causes of homelessness such as affordable housing and poor access to support networks are especially challenging for women and children experiencing domestic violence, who are estimated to comprise of between 46% to 92% of homeless…show more content…
