Values Portrayed in Popular Media Eileen Santos Eng. 122 Prof. Kathy Conner Date August 8, 2011 Values Portrayed by Popular Media Introduction In choosing to research the values portrayed in Popular Media, my plan was to add the values of Social Media. And to find out what differences Popular Media and Social Media had with their values, media style, timely matter and censorship while feeding us our daily news? My research for the Popular Media will be through the Public Broadcast News Stations like: ABC, CBS, and CNN. My research for the Social Media will be through our Social News Networks such as: Twitter, Facebook, and Yahoonews.com. The belief is that everyone will find Social Media gives us more of the truth, value, in a timely matter and less censorship, due to Popular Media having to answer to special interests like commercialism, and consumerism. The people who report news on Social Media are usually more true to their values, and report with less prejudice than people who report for Popular Media, because they have no commercialism, and so called employers telling them what to publish, or what not to publish. Popular Media must first satisfy special interest Social Media must satisfy no one, except their own personal freedom of expression. This knowledge is believed to be important for us all, so that we can decide how we would like our information delivered. We can choose to have our news information decided either for us, or by us. Social Media also is up to the minute on news events, even at times up to the second, with Popular Media it can take up to a week before we know what is going on, and then only portions of the truth are told, at best. Lazaroiu said it best in his article when he wrote “The world-changing potential of crowd sourced journalism in a corporate dominated mass-communications environment” (LAZAROIU, 2011).
