Later, the demonstrations had been spread to many cities throughout China, including Shanghai. To control the disorders within the country and to avoid the collapse of the communist party, the government used drastic policies to smash the protest (Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989, 2009). As a result, at 10:00 P.M. on June 3rd, 1989, after the movements lasted seven weeks, the PRC government
Nanjing had a population of well over one million that was mainly made up of people that where fleeing from the Japanese army that started to invade China. The Japanese military was motivated by their aggression and uncontrollable desire for expansion and imperialism. When Japan launched their attack on the city of Nanjing, China had no choice but to surrender the city (Yao). The next six weeks the capital was filled with brutal inhuman and terribly violent acts now known as the “Nanjing Massacre,” or “The Rape of Nanjing” (Gray). Terror filled the streets of Nanjing; Japanese forced their way into the homes of innocent Chinese civilians.
The CCP survived during the Nanjing decade was due to the Futian incident in 1930. This is when Mao led a violent two month purge against a rival unit within the Jiangxi Red Army. This involved the torture and mass execution of 3000 officers and men considered to be either GMD supporters or supporters of Li lisan who was also Mao’s rival. This act enabled him to wipe out any spies or people who were not fully attached to the CPP and lacks belief that they are going to be victorious. This could be seen as a key event for CCP because this gave the CCP supporters a wakeup call and made them stronger as a team.
He stopped anyone who wished to invade China and subsequently doubled the size of China. He also punished anyone who got in his way in the homeland. Today the survivors of the Nanking Massacre, now in their seventies and eighties, still recount the terrible things that happened over six weeks in 1937. Their voices tremble as they recount their memories, repeating over and over how they hate the Japanese. The Rape of Nanking was one of the most terrible atrocities ever recorded in history, and it happened only in the last century, between two countries we think of today as among the most civilized in the world. Yet it seems we have mostly forgotten about it, the Chinese government covering it to protect their trading status with Japan and Japan mostly denying it ever happened. The Japanese army, determined to take China and use its vast resources to fuel their defeat of the Oriental half of the world, marched through China in 1937, laying waste to everything they marched through.

China and Japan were considered two of the most powerful forces in Asia in the 19th century, and the two have fought many wars and battles against each other. When the purple mountain burns Through the characters used in the novel ‘When the Purple Mountain burns,’ Shouhua Qi, has managed to narrate the occurrences in China after the invasion by the Japanese military. This happened several years ago for few days, which the author stresses, were terrible and traumatizing to many. The city that was attacked in China was known as Nanjing, which the incident adopted the name, ‘Nanjing Massacre.’ As the book shows, many people including women and children lost their lives as the army fought the people indiscriminately. We note that the author has skillfully put in place the events from day one to day six with the specific dates and inclusion of the fictitious characters that have been established to create different perceptions regarding the events. Clearly, there is a moral dilemma faced by two characters, Ling and Little Chao, which caused much tension.
