Unjust Justice Amidst Tragedy After hurricane Katrina occurred, the city of New Orleans was destroyed and vastly devastated. Victims of the horrible event had to face “survival of the fittest” circumstances. Some people faced the disaster with crimes such as looting and committing acts of violence among the other survivors. One might say that the illegal acts were justified due to the dreadful environment, but many of the offenses were cruel and unmoral. These people helped the finger point towards a larger group for their single wrong-doings. Many stranded, hungry, and injured people we’re being put in a spectrum of blame for alleged criminal behaviors when they were innocent. The presence of poverty was associated with minorities. Not only had mother nature pulled a rug out from under the city, but racial profiling had also put the citizens in harms way. After losing their jobs, homes, and families, some people we’re arrest and accused of terrible things solely based on their race. In Dave Eggers book “Zeitoun”, we learn about a Syrian born American citizen was taken into custody, mistaken for a terrorist. Many authorities that were meant to keep peace, help rebuild and reorganize the city took part in unfair and intolerable acts that violated civilians rights, often based on race. The government had the difficult job of finding a way to somehow maintain order and keep everything in command. While the streets were flooded, rebels found ways to steal and ravage abandoned houses and businesses. With everything so out of order, how could the authorities not make mistakes with arrests? People weren’t racially profiled or denied their rights at all! The brave American heroes were just doing their jobs.
