TOURISM IN SPAIN – THE EVOLVING OFFERING Tourism in Spain was developed during the 1960s and the 1970s when the country became a popular place for summer holidays. Spain in one of the most visited countries in the world after France, United States and China. Spain attracts millions of people every year because of our summer resorts and beaches, our festivals including the nightlife, and lately the gastronomy, hunting, winter and cultural tourism. Tourism is the most important source of income for the Spanish economy providing 62.1% of the National Gross Product. Why is Spain a preferred destination for Tourism? The attractiveness of Spain has been evolving since the start of tourism in the country. A better and broader offering of the values in Spain is evolving the bases of tourism. The summer resorts and beaches were the first attractions for tourists to Spain. Because of our climate beautiful locations and sandy beaches most of the people chose places near the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The two Spanish archipelagos, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands have been attracting tourists from the cold territories of Central and Northern Europe for decades. Our hostelry and related services are recognized worldwide with the best relationship of quality and cost. With the economical development of the country, touristic attractions include now new areas. From my point of view, gastronomy and winery known worldwide and very appreciated are today important attractions. Besides, our cultural richness –highly recognized for classical museums, is now broadened to include new cities, villages, and cultural events. The effect of tourism in Spain will keep increasing in a long future but right now it is kind of stopped because of the economic crisis.
