With the drastic advance in technology, it’s quite the surprise that newspapers - an aged, but still effective, method of bringing local news to local communities - still exist. Newspaper companies are slowly dying because everyone is getting their fix (of the news) on their TVs, computers, laptops, and now thanks to some recent developments, even on their smartphones. Will newspapers one day become obsolete? There’s a large, increasing possibility that it will, and that’s quite unfortunate. Many become unaware with what is going on around them because of the large variety of news the forces of globalization presents. However, there is something we can do. Governments can protect newspapers to the extent that citizens can be informed of what is going on, especially on a local level. There are many things that the government can do to ensure that newspapers get that opportunity to be read. Without imposing laws that require citizens to read newspapers just to keep them alive, governments can fund local newspaper companies to deliver a copy of their news to each household at least once a month, free of charge. In this way, the people are not forced to get information from only particular media, but rather the option for easily getting local news is there and easily accessible through the newspapers. Also it gives local newspapers the support that they may need to be financially secure, and the support to help “keep them alive.” Newspapers may be an aged form of media, but that doesn’t mean that one can question its effectiveness. To begin with, not everyone possesses the technology used to share news, but the majority of people possess and utilize this technology because it makes accessing news easier and much faster. This is not necessarily a bad thing in itself, but with the many sources available through the Internet, people aren’t getting the “same”
