Alicia Zapata English 126 October 31, 2012 In the essay, “Are Social Networks Messing with Your Head?,” David DiSalvo convinces his readers that, “as social networks proliferate, they are changing the way people think about the Internet, from a tool used in solitary anonymity to a medium that touches on questions about human nature and identity; who we are, how we feel about ourselves, and how we act toward one another” (501). He bases his argument on multiple psychological research which indicates social networking sites do not cause loneliness, rather it makes those who were lonely prior to social networking lonelier, and for those who are not lonely, social networking sites actually help them continue their online relationships offline, which isn’t a bad thing in that case. It has also been researched that social networking is a self-esteem booster, and is even paving the way for those with narcissist personalities, however, just as it can be a self-esteem booster, social networking has the ability to bring down self-esteem just as fast. DiSalvo also talks about how we are obsessively going online, spending unhealthy amounts of time on social network websites to the point where it starts to become debilitating. The essay concludes with the idea that there is a transformational current going on, and social media is not only changing the way we interact with one another, but it is also affecting our brains, having a psychological effect on us.
Nowdays, people started to forget that the internet and new media technologies intersperse our notice but the book helps to keep our attention. So people need to read a books in order to improve their attention. In the article “ Does the Internet Make you Dumber or Smarter?, “ Nicholas Carr asks question that does the internet make people dumber or smarter?. I think a lot of people want to know the answers too. Carr thinks that the net makes people dumper because he proved the net makes people scattered and superficial thinkers.
Positives with the Internet and Growing Up The youth generation today uses the internet so much in their daily lives it has created an epidemic. The epidemic caused uproar of different ways of learning, communicating, teaching and even shopping or advertising done online. Technologies such as ipad, laptops and smart phones make internet access unbelievably easy. Since it is so easy, “Growing up Online”, a document by Frontline that aired on Januarary 18, 2008, claimed that the internet has caused many issues in the youth’s lives. One problem the internet caused stated in the documentary is, it is very hard for parents and authorities to regulate what kids do on the computer.
Florence Foster Instructor David English 102 11 January 2011 I have chosen to write about Brent Staples “What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow up in Cyberspace.” Staples argue that “so called online communities isolate adolescents and hinder their social development” (241). Which I believe to be true, but the world as we know it, is becoming very advanced to technology. So that would basically leave adolescents with two decisions, either they have to jump on board with technology, or be left behind. Which would you prefer? This rapid expansion in the ability of humans to publish new content has created a new flurry of debate over whether this is enhancing or destroying our culture. Two authors, Andrew Keen and Clay Shirky, tackle this issue with two very different conclusions. Keen provides valid points but falls short and seems like a hypocrite in his condemnation of web 2.0.
