In “The Untouchables” by Thomas L. Friedman, he discussed the importance of reinventing yourself in the work place and strengthening your abilities. In order to succeed it is imperative that American individuals seek to become better at their jobs than others because not only just fellow Americans are competing for the same job but also those in other countries who are willing to work for less or are simply more qualified. He predicts that untouchable jobs in the new flat world will fall into three categories: people who are special or specialized (e.g. Madonna, Michael Jordan, or your brain surgeon); people who are localized and anchored (e.g. waitresses, lawyers, plumbers, nurses, etc.); and the old middle jobs (e.g. people in the middle class who are under pressure because their jobs are becoming tradable). As noted, Americans are competing against people from China, India and Brazil. Being mediocre at your job will no longer cut it. As Friedman advices his daughters, “girls, finish your homework - people in China and India are starving for your jobs”, it expresses that americans must become better, learn more skills and become more efficient so they could keep their jobs in the states. These jobs can easily be outsourced to other countries. The ways of yesterday have changed every day as the world has globalized. Companies are changing the models and that they’ve been using for 15 years, teachers and students must rise up to the challenge and adapt. Nevertheless there are some jobs that are not likely to be outsourced as easily. These jobs are mostly specialty jobs such as major sporting athletes and surgeons. These are the “special or specialized”, positions that require such skill and specialization that make them safe and secure.
