Case study: The University Art Museum

This paper discusses the issues faced by the university art museum in its structure and management of the museum after a long period under a single management. It also discusses changes that can be made to avoid future problems while establishing a vision and mission statement in focus of achieving objectives and goals as a scholarly museum. The university Art museum was create in 1912 as a small and private museum open only to members of the art department who came in as private guest of the director . The museum was given as an endowment along side its building by the university’s first president’s son. He also gave his own small, but high-quality collections which included an Estrucian figurine and one unique pre-Raphaelite painting. He served as the museum unpaid director until his death.
During his time the museums director he brought in few additional collections mostly from alumina of the university and rarely bought anything. As a result the museum had several small collections of rare quality art, as long as he ran the museum it was never open to the public until his death in the 1920s. After his death the university intended in bringing in a professional museum director as it had been agreed with the founder initially. Meanwhile in the meantime Miss Kirkoff a history art student who had showed interest in the museum took over temporarily as director with any pay. She then stayed on for 30yrs as the museum`s director. During her time as the director she catalog everything and also integrated the museum as a work of the university. Raising funds for the museum,organizing exhibitions and pursued new gifts mainly still from the alumina of the university to increase the volume of art in the museum.
