Dave Armstrong Case Analysis Aamod Baijal 11PGDM061 This case is about an individual called Dave Armstrong. Dave was born in a small town in Texas. He worked as a computer programmer for Thorne Enterprises after graduating from his college. In 6 months, Mr Thorne made him president of a subsidiary that sold conveyor belts. When Dave could not produce the desired results, he decided to quit and joined life insurance business in Amarillo. He was satisfied with his comfortable living but there was no momentum built up in the way he operated as it was a one man show. He applied to Harvard Business School and got selected. As he had renewal income from old policyholders, he decided to accept it. Now 3 months from his graduation, he has 3 job prospects, of which he has to choose one. Job A – It is a startup, an idea given by Mr. Thorpe. Job A has most upside potential but would require $1 million to get started. Dave would have to invest almost all of his savings. It has some chances of not working out all Job B – It has better odds of working out, but requires an investment of $100k from Dave’s side. This job could help in developing contacts with prospective buyers and sellers. Dave feels it does not have an excitement level to it. Job C – Dave considers this job to be a traditional one. He would be working with some more employees and would be evaluating oil and gas properties.But this position does not open up till 6-12 months. Dave needs to decide which job he would like to take in 3 weeks. Analysis – Dave is in a dilemma which every person goes through in his/her life. Career based decisions are the most difficult ones. Dave’s decision would not just be dependent on what he prefers. He has a family to look after and wants to take their inputs as well.
