This led to conflicts and therefore partially led to the destruction of the Native American way of life. The white Americans quickly claimed land and would move the Plains Indians around as they saw fit, usually affected by where gold had recently been discovered. This culminated in putting the Native Americans on reservations. In many of the agreements and treaties signed over land the settlers would claim never to go back on their promises “as long as grass grew” and “the mountains stood”. Breaking the promises would have shown the Native Americans that the settlers thought little of their intelligence, and also would instil a lack of trust in the settlers, as now every apparently solemn vow to not attack certain areas or to treat the Plains Indians better etc.
Many Americans opposed the removal of the Native Americans and argued that they too had been civilized and should be allowed to remain on the homelands, specifically Davey Crocket. This was a valid point of debate for the Native Americans, although at this point the strength in numbers for the government were overwhelming compared to that of the Native Americans living on their homeland. On the other hand, some of the natives thought strategically about agreeing with the treaty because this would alleviate “white harassment”(Indian Removal, PBS). This shows the debate amongst the natives themselves, over the removal act, leaving some tribes divided and again assisting with the destruction of their
Apess begins his story talking about the conditions of the reservation that Indians are living in and having to deal with, and blames the white men for these conditions. This is due to them “supposedly” being the masters or overseers’ of the reservations. He talks about how the white men could care less if the Indians lived or died. That the white men would take a lot of the Indians vegetation and taking their timber which is of most value to the Indians or any other items for free and then selling it to get a profit for themselves off of it. He feels that with no education the Indians are feel they cannot take care of themselves or their land.
Tecumseh also explains that it is the American’s wish to “prevent the Indians from doing as [they] wish for them, to unite and let them consider their lands as a common property.” Not only does Tecumseh accuse the white people, but he also intends to confront the Native Americans who attempted to sell the land. With strong resolution, Tecumseh announces that “No tribe has the right to sell, even to each other, much less to strangers.” He also uses firm diction to point out that in the future, the Native Americans are “prepared to punish those who propose to sell land to the Americans.” Overall Tecumseh expresses his opinion on the forced relocation of Native Americans by employing an accusatory and adamant tone while
Christopher Columbus , on his written memoirs noted some facts concerning the native Indians (Columbus ' reports to Ferdinand and Isabella [1493] . Columbus noted that they do not have any knowledge of metal craft , that the natives do not know how to make and use weapons probably because of the fact that they have no need for it since they are peaceful beings , that they do not seem to practice Cannibalism unlike other primitive natives and that the natives are very generous with what they have , up to the extent of actually offering what they have to others . The natives were also observed not to have practiced idolatry , but believes that everything associated with good comes from heaven , that the Indians revere them probably in reference to their color and the innovative things they possess , and that the Indians were observed not to have any individual inclination to own any object privately . Everything they have is distributed by a single person who is in charge of doing this Two other explorers going by the name Jacques Cartier , and Thomas Harriot made the same evaluation that the Indians on that continent were very generous with what they have , that the Indians are a poor people in terms of knowledge and skill , and that this is probably the primary reason for them to seek our friendship (Cartier , J . [1535] , and that the Indians have this notion that the equipment the colonizers brought were things made by the celestial beings themselves (Harriot T
It tells us how natives lived a free life, no rules or anything, because no one would think of doing such delinquent things, until they created laws (the government) provoking people to do so. The government told the natives to create and enforce rule to make them civilized people, to make you understand that it was for the worse of Native Americans. When it comes to down to it, there are many different things that democracy did that affected the Native Americans, today I will be focusing on a main issue everyone has due to democracy and that is health.
Having no respect for others beliefs they simply would just push them off their land in the thought that they would find homes somewhere else and that they would be fine. The Naive Americans didn’t understand why the Europeans were pushing them off their sacred land and why they couldn’t have just found land somewhere else. Through all three of these groups family was very important. With Native Americans
The economic, social and political issues that occurred were not taken lightly by the Indians and sometimes the way they acted was diverse and disruptive. In today’s time, neither federal government nor the Native American tribes have come to a conclusion as to what identity or status the North American continent should be. In the nineteenth century, times were devastating for the Native Americans. The United States signed the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 with the Sioux which was to keep non-Indians from hunting or settling on their reservation which had been recently established. At that time, they gave up rights to almost all the land they were occupying.
Freemen think for themselves; whereas, herdmen have someone else think for them. Mayor Orden tells Colonel Lanser, “They are orderly under their own government… But my people have elected me. They made me and they can unmake me… My people don’t like to have others think for them.” Mayor Orden trys to explain to Colonel Lanser that the people of that town do not follow orders; they keep order by making their own decisions. The freemen are the people who have no reason to start a war; but, once a war is brought on they have a reason to fight for their freedom. Freemen act on their own and do things for themselves; whereas, herdmen let someone else act for them.
The word civilized, as defined by Websters, means to have an advanced or humane culture, society, etc.. White men did not see the Indian culture as advanced or humane and therefore began forcing white man's way of life upon the Native American Tribes. "Civilize them with a stick" is a horrific rendition of the life of a Native American child plucked from her village at a young age and forced into an old
