Kris Lucas Mr. McClain Shakespeare, Period 3 February 3, 2012 ****** The feud between the Montagues and the Capulets drives Mercutio, Tybalt, Romeo, and Juliet to think irrationally and make mistakes that lead to their deaths. Romeo and Juliet are young and blindly fall in love because of one another’s physical attractiveness. Mercutio and Tybalt hate each other because of an age-old family feud, which they do not know the cause of. Romeo and Juliet’s Love cannot exist because of the hate between their families, so they act irrationally and end up dead; Likewise, Mercutio and Tybalt are driven to hate one another for their families and also die as a result of the hate. Mercutio and Tybalt’s relationship is one of hate based on the feud between their families. Because the feud between the Montague and Capulet family has been going on for such a long time, the reason that it all started has been lost. After the first fight scene between the Montagues and Capulets, the Prince addresses the two families: “What, ho! you men, you beasts… Three civil brawls, bred of an airy word By thee, old Capulet, and Montague, Have thrice disturbed the quiet of our streets”. (Shakespeare 31) “When the Prince calls the Capulets and Montagues a bunch of "beasts," he implies that their hatred doesn't seem to have any rational cause – it is simply the result of passions they refuse to restrain.”…show more content…
Romeo and Juliet wish to get married soon after they meet even though they know their marriage will cause great unrest for both families. Because Juliet wants to marry Romeo and not Paris, she drinks a sedative before she is to marry Paris to make her appear dead so that she may later marry Romeo. However, when Romeo hears that she is dead he becomes hysterical and gets drinks a vial of poison so he could be with her. None of this would have happened if the families could put aside their hate for each other. Similarly, Mercutio and Tybalt hate each other and will take any chance they get to kill the other. When Mercutio and Tybalt begin to banter at one another it appears to be playful. But the playful banter escalates into a sword fight, which results in the accidental death of Mercutio. Romeo, having learned Tybalt killed his coz, seeks vengeance and he finds it by killing Tybalt. Again, the cause of death for these two foes is the same of the two lovers:
