We can tell that the writer resents and is frustrated by his father as it says “and he being him can’t help but say.......... and I, being me” which shows that he is frustrated at their relationship. However the Harmonium is used to describe his father so therefore his family life whereas in Nettles it is reversed. The Nettles, that had caused pain for the boy, is actually describing soldiers and war therefore the underlying message is not about family but about war and the underlying message

A gutless fucking wonder!’ When Blacky explains to his father about the storm, Bob insults him rather than swallow his pride and takes his son’s advice on board. The relationship that is shared between Blacky and his father has negatively impacted Blacky’s self-esteem so much that it has led to him not having faith in his own father and to expect no support. During the novel, the desertion that Bob shows toward his son leads Blacky to be more independent, and he learns to expect no support from his father, as he cannot rely on Bob to look after him. We feel sympathy as this abandonment is not his fault and we therefore feel pity. We also feel sorry for him as he begins to feel bad about rejecting his rescuer’s son at Christmas. At his family home, we realise that his only friends were characters in books, showing he had a very lonely upbringing.
His poor treatment there is more shocking because he has been drawn as a character who had, “worked hard” and ”owed nothing to any man.” Mrs Edwards, the daughter, is confused at first by the nun’s reaction to seeing her. When the nun asks, “Is your father lighter or darker than you?” she begins to realize that he will not be admitted there. The nun sends them away and delivers the platitude, “God bless you dear”. Mrs Edwards replies “and God pity you sister”. Her father dies at home, and she has endured the agony of watching him die.
The other characters are bothered and annoyed by the grievances of Anse, and his neighbors such as Tull view Addies death and Vardaman’s actions as “A judgment on them. I see the hand of the lord upon this boy for Anse Bundren’s judgment and warning.” (72) Tull thinks that Anse deserved what he got and that the way he acted warranted the “judgment” passed by god. Anse’s dialect is another part of his personality that is very unique. It is obvious from his speech that he is uneducated and “country”. This lack of education could partly be an explanation for his selfishness, because he has never had the exposure to things other than what he knows in his own small world.
