The Outsider: Theme When one does not follow society’s expectations, he or she can be judged negatively by others is a theme in The Outsider. In the novel, Meursault is judged by society because of his response to circumstances around him. Meursault is sentenced to death because society cannot accept his behaviour and his actions. His detachment from the outside world and his actions were what caused Meursault’s execution. Meursault’s detached personality is first shown when he showed no emotion at his mother’s funeral and how he did not know his mother’s age: “I [Meursault] hadn’t wanted to see mother, hadn’t cried once and I’d left straight after the funeral without paying my respects at her grave.” (86).
We can tell that the writer resents and is frustrated by his father as it says “and he being him can’t help but say.......... and I, being me” which shows that he is frustrated at their relationship. However the Harmonium is used to describe his father so therefore his family life whereas in Nettles it is reversed. This sense of pity is illustrated through Goodman’s specifically worded phrases such as when Phil’s “dearly beloved” eldest son asks his neighbors what his father was like and the “embarrassment” it caused. When Phil’s daughter “has nothing to say” to each other, and how his third son “only board here.” Phil’s consumption of his work overshadowed the love of his family and friends.
Family and parent’s are just one of many of life’s challenges. Gordie is facing this challenge as his parents are ignoring and neglecting him ever since his older brothers death. His friends help him get through this but mainly Chris helps him with his brother’s death by telling him that it isn’t his fault and that it was meant to be Dennis as Gordie thinks that he should have died instead of Dennis. Within the short story "The Painted Door" Ann shows that she experiences feelings of depression, and isolation. Ann's negative mood is apparent through the story and can be seen at any time during the story. Ann's husband is named John and through the story she says many sarcastic and condescending comments, "plenty of wood to keep me warm - what more could a women ask for" (Ross 288). It is clear that Ann is unhappy with John and not satisfied with him. She does not want John to go to his father's house to check on him because she does not want to be left alone in the house when there is a snowstorm is taking place outside.
Sling Blade’s main theme is the redemption of Karl’s lost childhood because of his disability and how he wasn't accepted, not even by his parents. Karl Childer’s overly religious parents believed he was a punishment from God. They severely abused him, treated him like an animal, and forced him to live in a shed in solitude. Everyone in town picked on him and called him names. He was seen as a “retard” or slower than others.
