The Slave Girl By, Buchi Emecheta HIS 207 Book Review Buchi Emecheta wrote a book depicting the life of a woman sold into slavery entitled, The Slave Girl. Throughout this novel you follow the life of Ogbanje Ojebeta. Ogbanje was a young girl born into a relatively normal family. She was later sold by her brother to a wealthy family and lived the live of a slave, although a comfortable slave. This book related to many themes in African History. Some of those themes are gender relations and slavery. Gender relations come up in the overall subject of women being owned by men, and how they’re never quite “free”. Slavery is the main theme of the book, and comes up numerous times in African History as well. The term “slavery” is used metaphorically and literally throughout the book. It all began with Ogbanje Ojebeta. Her family was well off and she was living a comfortable life until felenza struck. Both of her parents succumbed to the epidemic and the result was fatal. She was left with only her brother, Okolie. They began a journey together, which brought them to Oku market in the village of Onitsha. There, he sold Ogbanje, because he needed the money, for the price of 8 pounds and went on his way leaving her with her new owner, Ma Palagada. Here, she lived quite comfortably for a slave. After arriving from Lagos, Ma’s son, Clifford, beings to acquire a liking for Ogbanje. He receives permission from hi smother to fall in love with her, but not much comes of this. To help Ma Palagada from a long-standing serious illness, her daughter, Victoria, traveled from Asaba to aid her. Victoria plans to bring Ogbanje back to Asaba with her as her housemaid. Ogbanje did not want this and runs away back to her original village of Ibuza. A sentence in this novel depicts her feelings towards the situation: “I would
