The relationship between colour harmony and the human colour vision system Name: Tao Yuan ID: 200814226 1. Introduction The world is colorful, every space is filled with brilliant colours. Color has a strong power to create brand image, affect the buyer’s decision making process and change the mood of consumers. Colour harmony as an attribute of the colour composition affects human vision as well. Therefore, the paper tries to explain what the colour harmony is and how it related to the human colour vision. 2. Colour harmony Judds defined colour harmony is a pleasing effect produced by two or more colours seen in neighbouring areas [1]. Color harmony represents a satisfying balance or unity of colors. Combinations of colors that exist in harmony are pleasing to the eye. However, colour harmonies are difficult to define because they are subjective; those that apeal to some people, repel others. Although human eyes are sensitive and efficient in sorting out, responding to, and creating harmonies of colour, it has proven impossible to formulate and establish absolute rules for harmony. 3.1 Colour wheels The color wheel is the basic tool based on red, yellow and blue. A circle shape that is divided equally in to 12 sections, with each section displaying a different color according to its pigment value. As all colors are created from the three primary colors (red, green and blue), the primary colors are shown forming a triangle within the color wheel. The color wheel shows the relationship between the primary colors, secondary colors, and complementary colors. 3.2 Munsell’s Colour Combination We determine whether or not we are successful by critically assessing the visual balance and harmony of the final composition—balance and harmony are achieved by the visual contrast that exists between color combinations.
