The story, The Kindness of Strangers by Jon Kabat-Zinn, gives us hope in a world where everyone seems to be afraid of anyone. Being kind is not a strange thing regardless of who manifests this good deed. He allows us to believe that it is cool to be good hearted. Mr. Zinn started from a common belief that most Americans do have. It is a belief, or even a fear, that most have of hitch-hikers. Sometimes, we wish to stop and help out, but are afraid to do so. After all the newspapers are full of accidents, murders and so on that occurs when one goes out of his way to be a good Samaritan. Often, one does it to his peril. Zinn is not so crazy. As a reporter, he took a risk, without which we might never have the opportunity to realize how kind some people really are. He was surprised to learn such a valuable lesson about America. Truth be told, this reader was too considering all the reports one hears on radio and sees on television. It is refreshing to know there are people who still believe in being kind to someone else. It took courage for Mr. Zinn to undertake such a journey. His courage, leap of faith, allows us to continue to believe in human beings. The world is indeed dangerous, but there is hope. Sharing and helping someone less fortunate than one self is a way to spread that hope; thank you Mr. Jon Kabat-Zinn for such a good
