Negus and Astor (2014) argue that song lyrics incorporate more than just a performance. They are independent and are no way related to the practice of performing songs. A song cannot be reduced to its performance. The lyrics of a song go beyond the way a song is interpreted, transcribed and its renditions. Their study also incorporates Frith's study on lyrics. The way songwriters, poets, audiences, and readers understand and interpret a song is different. A debate ensues on whether it is appropriate and legitimate to rate a song based on the way it is performed or the way its lyrics are read. Further improvements in technology have led to professional recording studios becoming delocalized and traditional record companies have declined as a result of advancement in digital technology and sharing of files through the internet. Thus there was a need to reinvent the paradigm of studio professions. They begin their study with research on the history and the music recording culture and how it became different from concert performances. Further, they look at the positive and negative impact of technology advancement on the reduction of the traditional business model and the way it has affected the practices of studios and the professionals in the industry. The authors have also interviewed six world-renowned record producers. They seek to understand how the advancement in technology has affected their profession and their thoughts on the future of the music recording industry professionals. Their findings indicate that producers would be more open to working on more projects at the same time that they would have in the past. The interviewees suggest that times have changed regarding what is expected from artists and financial constraints are also an issue.
