Carolyn Vidal 02.04.13 Homework #4 period 3 The Great Gatsby – Chapter 4 1.) What does Gatsby say about his past to Nick? Identify at least one problem with his story. Gatsby and Nick take a drive to New York to have lunch. While driving Gatsby ask “what’s your opinion of me, anyhow?” page 65. Gatsby being fully aware about the rumors, begins to tell Nick about his life. He says that he acquires all his wealth from his families which lived in the Middle West (San Francisco), but are all dead now. He also says that he was raised in America but attended Oxford, because all his ancestors attended as well. Nick suddenly remembered what Jordan had said about Gatsby lying. Every time Gatsby says “educated at Oxford” he would usually stumble, or rush this sentence as if he were hiding something. Gatsby also began telling Nick about his accomplishments at the war, and how he used to collect jewels all over Europe. Gatsby noticed the sudden change on Nicks face and pulled out a medal which said “Major Jay Gatsby” and a photo of him and others at oxford, to prove that he was telling the truth. 2.) Who is Wolfsheim and what does Gatsby’s relationship to him suggest? Wolfsheim is a gambler and he has known Gatsby for several years (they met after the war). Wolfsheim is well known because he “fixed the World Series in 1919” and because he has many business connections. Gatsby’s relationship to Wolfsheim suggests that they both are hiding something, and that they both do business together.
