That is building and maintaining a family is no easy task and, no matter how hard you may try, you cannot please everyone all the time. Edelman describes the resentment that stemmed from the unfulfilled ideal of co-parenting as anger but also as a massive disappointment in her life. This was something that she had assumed would be from the start and it hit her hard when she discovered that
She became extremely uncomfortable with the tensions between her sister, the thought of her husband in combat at war, and the expectations of the team. She often complained that the “game” was becoming too hard and Dugan reminded her that it is suppose to be that way or else everyone would do it. “The hard is that makes it great.” (Marshall) Dottie refused to see how special and important her opportunity was. The entire league viewed her as the most talented player and this made her uncomfortable appearing as being #1 and the pressures that came with that. On the other hand, Dottie’s sister Kit represented the “fear of failure” athlete.
All children want attention from their parents, it can be good or bad attention and if they do not receive the attention they want it can lead to struggle for the child. The narrator's of both stories are not shown the attention that they want and makes them struggle to find their true identities. In "The Charmer" Winifred is never the centre of attention, she is always overshadowed by her brother Zachary "..it was like he was a movie star or TV hero or something" (Wilson 101). Her parents always gave him the attention, even when he disobeyed the rules of the house he still found a way to make it positive and funny to the parents. Zachary got so much attention that Winnifred wanted to be just like him that's why she did everything he asked her to do but when they both grow up things change.
Jerry Sandusky and Pennsylvania State University: Unethical Behavior Jerry Sandusky was a popular assistant coach for Pennsylvania State University. Sandusky was also the chief executive officer of his charity for young people called the Second Mile. Sandusky and his lack of ethics used his power as an authority figure to sexually advance with the young boys he and Joe Paterno coached. This is a clear case of someone misusing their power. This is an ethical business issue that displays the lack of business ethics used by Sandusky as well as some of his fellow employees.
After the incident of her mother taken away from her she drastically became a whole another person. At her new foster home Antonia wasn't as nice as she once was. Antonia was rather rude to her foster parents Tillie and Luis. She was open minded and caring before but once she was brought into the new foster family it was as if she had lost these character traits. She still showed love to her mother and brothers but she still boxed out the foster parents who have treating her as a princess.
She didn’t enjoy her time spent there so why she was so willing to come back. Some people never get enough of the life they live even if it‘s bad . Its just like a women who is in a abusive relationship and we wonder why the never leave. Its because once someone adapted to a certain life style the desire for change is slim to none. The narrative made it clear that she didn’t fit in with the people in her town but feared leaving because that lifestyle was all she ever known.
Despite the fact that Darl is older than Jewel, Darl still has feeling of resentment and jealousy towards Jewel. Jewel had always been sought after more by Addie for her daily requests and essentials being that he was the only child she didn’t bear while with Anse. Darl’s attitude progressed in a negative approach as the novel developed. Darl remains upset and angry at the family while Jewel makes sacrifices and understands his role in the family. “I’ll ride on ahead…you can follow where I am…”(144).
Trying to Break Even In life, you never know what could occur. Most people are being focused on just trying to break even. Everyone in this world has a name. Most important of all, more often than not you don’t get to choose your name; it is your parent that chooses who you are to be calls for the rest of your life. The name they choose for you could be a fatal role for you when you grow up, but ask yourself this, does a name affect the way people treat you as you advance in this fragmented society? Some may say yes and other may say no. There was a recent debate between two professors at Harvard University about this topic.
You don't have to think exactly like the author in terms of what exactly the theme is, everyone could have a different take. Like dance, an audience would watch something that the choreographer put together based on her life experiences but as they watch it they relate to it differently than she would, characters represent different people in their lives than the choreographers would. In A Long Way Gone, one of the main themes is; war is hell. For me, not being able to relate to being in a war or even being remotely close to one, the first thing that comes to mind is divorce. Being in the middle of a marital war between parents.
