In the novel of Strange Objects, Gary Crew uses a variety of binaries to creatively force the reader into examining his points of view. A binary can be identified as a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning. When a reader recognises such binaries, they are able to open up the ideas in which the author is attempting to express. Gary Crew has used a vast assortment of binaries such as past/present, sane/insane, foreign/native etc to shape his ideas in a way that will easily reinforce the understanding of the reader. The use and contrast of the binaries is essential for this novel and has been done very effectively by Gary Crew.
The thing that I liked about this book was how unique of an idea that it was initially and then how the author built off of this idea to build the story up to a point where the reader can become attached and entangled in the story. I think that any reader, who enjoys a unique book with a strangely unique plot, will enjoy this book. To strengthen his argument and enhance his writing, Gladwell uses rhetorical writing strategies. Gladwell supports his argument with ethos, which is presenting a theory through scientific studies, expert analysis, and real-life examples. Gladwell deducts from his main idea to support his argument with anecdotes of examples in real-life and in science. Also, the diction Gladwell uses in his writing enhances his argument by showing formality through writing in standard English. He also uses some psychological jargon in the scientific and the marketing examples to prove to his audience that he is intelligent, and he knows what he is talking about.
