INSERT TITLE HERE… LATER 2 “I will start my essay now… after I finish watching this music video,” is what I said about five hours ago. It was a downward spiral from then on: one video turned into two, then a few more, followed by a short nap and then a little midnight snack. Now, with only seven hours left to class, I am struggling to finish up this essay. If you have not already guessed, I am talking about procrastination. According to the Oxford English dictionary, procrastination is “[the] delay or postponement of an action”. It comes from the Latin word, procrastinare, where the root words are pro, meaning ‘forward’ and crastinus, meaning ‘belonging to tomorrow’. But I do not think a formal definition is enough to even begin to describe procrastination. Here are my definitions on what procrastination is. We usually procrastinate doing things that we do not want to do and instead, concentrate on the things we like doing. For example, I prefer watching old movies on Youtube to editing a paper for another class. Sometimes, we even fill our procrastination with things we do not even like doing. For example, a friend of mine would much rather prefer alphabetising his music collection instead of writing out his reference list for his research paper. Procrastination embodies doing everything except what you are supposed to be doing. For example, right now (apart from fully concentrating on my essay), I am downloading music and checking updates on Twitter and that is only the tip of the iceberg. Earlier on, I decided to put away the clothes my mother had been nagging at me to keep for days. From my Twitter updates, I can tell you that this is quite an accurate depiction of procrastination.
