These feelings towards a Government often occur in today’s society and the portrayal of this in V for Vendetta emphasises the discontent to the audience and presents us with a negative view on society as a whole; as it relates to people like Mugabe and his Government who control by fear and intimidation and are the centre of discontent. An extremely effective technique McTeigue used to present a negative view on society is dialogue. After the V destroys the Old Bailey the media report that the building was actually demolished for structural reasons. While watching this report on TV Evey’s co-worker exclaims, “Do you believe that load of bollocks?” This illustrates the unhappiness within the masses and the discontent they hold. Another example is a quote from Dascomb, “Our job is to report the news, not fabricate it... That's
They, most of the time, use mass media and espionage for bad purposes. Forunately, social networks are liberating people from any manner of political manipulation, including the use of mass media and espionage. Political manipulation through the mass media and espionage, grants the decisions and control of the society to a group of power in a such manner the rest of the people obey the will of it. On the other hand, mass media and espionage are no longer just information services; Mass media and espionage have become effective weapons of political manipulation. The politicians are using these weapon to achieve their objectives even if these objectives bad, non legitimate illegitimate.
There may seem to be many motivations for villains throughout the times but as we study these scoundrels we find that generally they are motivated by pure jealousy, or a need of superiority. They utilize manipulation, both physically and mentally in order to achieve their goals and show a lack of remorse. Stephan King’s “Misery”, provides us with a very graphical depiction in Annie Wilkes a sadistic, mentally unstable retired nurse, who has a desire for power and control. Annie goes to tortuous extremes on her captive Paul Sheldon to realize this. Iago from Shakespeare’s play Othello is also a power hungry villain who enjoys having people under his control, he is driven by extreme jealousy and the motivation, revenge.
The powerful such as the police have the power to decide what gets reported to the public and use the mass media to enhance control by creating fear within society. This is emphasised by General Director of the BBC Michael Grade who reported that “the effect of crime reporting by the media is almost inevitably to increase fear…the public receives only a distorted impression” (Grade 1989). The term ‘moral panics’ is mainly associated Stanley Cohen. Cohen defines moral panics as “a condition, episode, person, or group persons emerges to become defined as a threat in societal values and interests; its nature is presented in a stylised and stereotypical fashion by the mass media” (Cohen, 1972.p.9). According to Cohen moral panics are part of a collective behaviour where there is panic over a particular behaviour seen as deviant
Mob mentality is used to refer to unique behavioral characteristics that develop when people are in large groups. The term “mob” urges from an image of aggressive, disorganized, and started group of people. Psychologists study group behavior and tend to prefer terms such as “hysteria.” The study of mob mentality is quite interesting. Mob mentality is used to analyze situations that turn into violence. Mob mentality is shown when certain individuals urge or lead a crowd or group into certain behaviors.
All of these visual features combine to show us how powerful the government is: how the government can track people at will and create the kind of intense fear that Zavitts feels when he’s being chased. We want him to escape but we know that the N.S.A has huge power. Therefore, Scott helps us to feel the fears of losing our privacy to too much surveillance. Music and dialogue also contribute to the idea that too much surveillance threatens personal privacy. During the chase scene, kettle drums beat quickly as Zavitts runs, intensifying the feelings of fear during the chase.
“Language that reduces people or things to categories can induce an audience to accept a claim unthinkingly or to make snap judgments concerning groups of individuals about whom they know little” (Moore, 2007, p.122). Snap judgments are what uninformed people make about groups and these judgments become prejudice and bias. The words used to describe certain groups can certainly influence the thoughts other people have on those same groups, thus, damaging the group being stereotyped. Politicians seem to be high on the list of those stereotyped. Often politicians are seen as “self-serving, hypocritical, dishonest con artists” (Smith, 2009).
Competition among fellow teens leads to jealousy and jealousy leads to violent acts.Television, radio, and news papers are all ways of transferring messages to people. One might see a violent movie and decide to re-enact the scenes thus causing harm to one’s self or to others. Hidden meanings of racism and hate are put into music. Teens hear the words of their supposed role models and think it is OK to follow in their foot steps.Study show that every north American child will see up to 200,000 violent in the media by the time they turns 18 according to kids health. Constant exposure to violence, whether it is tales of real life violence on the news or fictitious film or television violence, makes a teenager desensitized to the realities and consequences of violence.
