When the trials began, many accused others of witchcraft and this lead to them accusing even more. The new news of the entire witchcraft epidemic in Salem left many disturbed and trying to eliminate the bad of the town. The novel allows the reader to reflect on the life of the Salem people and understand the happenings. One example is the reflection of the lives of teenage girls in the puritan society, sent by God to marry and have a family, lacking the happiness of teen hood. Thus, explaining a
The difference is that their statement of faith comes from the Westminster Confession of Faith (OPC). Presbyterians believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God. It’s the only infallible authority for belief. One more difference is on the subject of justification of faith (OPC).
The poem “Upon the Burning of our House,” by Anne Bradstreet, was in many ways one of the most devout showings of Puritanism. Bradstreet makes many allusions to the bible, as well as to God himself. The poem proves that all in the world is temporary in the eyes of God, but only as a test for our faith in him. Bradstreet uses both allusion, and inverted syntax to show just how temporary mundane items are. These two literary devices are also used to create the dramatic setting of the poem and form the ideas of Puritan values.
Once the grievances had been posted on the door of Wittenberg's cathedral, the idea of an alternative religion had been planted. The Puritans, from the ideas of Luther, believed that the bible alone was the only voice of God and with that, all men are equal. Similar to Luther, John Calvin also had varying views from the the church, but his were the idea of predestination. Predestination is the idea that God had selected the “elect” to go to heaven from the very beginning. The Puritans used these two men to help shape their unique and devote religion.
He concludes that elders, overseers, and pastors are one in the same according to the New Testament. In Hammett’s view, if there is a distinction between elders, overseers, pastors, and deacons, then this could negate the effect of congregational government (157). He concludes that there should only be two offices of leadership in the church; that of pastors and deacons, governed by a regenerate congregation of believers devoted to the Lord’s service. The fourth part asks, “What does the church do?” Here the author raises the issue of various ministries of the church and the ordinances of the church (i.e. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper).
In detail we will discuss the relationship between inspiration and inerrancy. And then, before concluding this paper we will discuss how the answers to these questions provide structure to how we as Christians should live our lives. To a Christian who has accepted God as their personal Lord and Savior the Bible has authority. The same should not be said for someone who hasn’t made that confession. As a Christian we have accepted that the Bible contains the true Word of God written by apostles who received divine inspiration to guide the recorded works.
The social structure of the New England Puritans was a brotherhood. As the leader of the Puritans, John Winthrop, Governor of Massachusetts, believes that they should be an example of the purest religion, free from prosecution which he expresses in his essay, “A Modell of Christian Charity” (Doc A). The puritans had a powerful sense of purpose; to build a Christian theocracy. The community of the Puritans was tightly woven and centered on the church and town hall with a strong relationship between church and state (Doc B). The people believed in the necessity of education and a trained and educated ministry.
The English people were forced to practice the Anglican beliefs of the Church. The Founding Fathers did not want the people of the United States to be forced to- or away from- any religion, although they practiced Christianity themselves. In fact, “In God We Trust” is not the only “religious” statement on our currency. On the back of the one dollar bill above the Great Seal
Benjamin Franklin was raised in a Calvinist family with Puritan foundations, but Franklin later grew to become a worldly individual through his studies and life experiences. Franklin created his own image of God, agreed with reason over religion, and became one of the most significant figures of the Enlightenment. Both Franklin and the Puritans agreed on the existence of God as well as the idea that man should be consistently striving to achieve self-improvement. However, Franklin and the Puritans had opposing conceptions of God and human nature and the relationship between the two through the belief of whether man should accomplish self-improvement from secular or nonsecular motives and the authority of God over humanity. One similarity that exists between the Puritans and Franklin is they both recognized the existence of God.
