The Birthday Party In the short story The Birthday Party by Katherine Brush, the wife of a selfish husband had a special cake brought out for his birthday which he disliked and became mad. The husband does not like surprises and says something horrible to his wife which makes her cry the rest of the time. The husband is a selfish person for getting mad at the wife for surprising him. She was trying to do something nice and please him. He should’ve stayed calm at least until they were out of the restaurant. Both the husband and wife are quiet people so they both should know if they like surprises or not. If the husband doesn’t like them, she should have waited and had the cake for him at home. He, on the other hand, should’ve not been so mad about her trying to do something nice. The wife is more outgoing than the husband so she thought it would be ok to have a surprise for him. She was not expecting him to react the way he did and it turned on her when he made her cry for the rest of the time at dinner. If she would’ve known her husband better, she could’ve done something that he would’ve liked. He may have just wanted to have dinner and go home but she may have messed up everything. He reacted the only way he knew how. The husband got mad because he may not like surprises and he was actually surprised. He acted in the wrong way but he may have not had time to think about what was going on. He just reacted and got mad. He should have waited to get mad at his wife when they left the restaurant. The wife caused something that she could’ve prevented. Dinner could’ve gone smoothly if she would’ve waited to do the cake at home or somewhere without other people around. The husband overreacted to the whole situation. He should be happy on his birthday not mad or upset. The wife should have known that he didn’t like attention brought to him. He should’ve had more
