The Arts During the Renaissance, the arts changed dramatically because of humanism. Artists who painted began using different elements in their works, these elements included light & shadow, texture & pattern, better colors, elegance and realistic details. Patrons paid artists to produce work that were inspired by classical times. Architects began use ancient Roman/Greek ideas such as columns, arches and statues. Architects loved light, so they used domes, less stained glass and big windows. Architecture was built for beauty, elegance & comfort. During this time period the roles of artists changed drastically. Sculptures were made to celebrate the human body, decoration, for important people/events. During the Renaissance, writers focused on translating works of Greeks & Romans. Humanism encouraged writers to write about thoughts and emotions. An example would be Christine de Pisan, who protested the way women were portrayed in medieval literature. Art reflected the humanists’ interests: beauty, the present world, the individual and human excellence. Our world would be very different if not for the Renaissance and the idea of humanism. Sciences & Mathematics After 500 year of no advancements in science and mathematics. It was time for change, the Renaissance allowed advancements encouraged by humanists. As attitudes towards science changed, more questions and experiments were inspired. Astronomy played an important role in changing people’s worldviews on Earth and overall. Kepler, Galilei, Newton & Copernicus all played a significant role in the discoveries of astronomy. One of the most major discoveries was that the Earth revolved around the sun, not vice versa (how many Europeans thought the solar system worked) In the Renaissance they discovered germs, alternative cures and more about the human body (anatomy).
