Author O’Brian also confuses the reader by writing his novel as if everything that was told took place in the real world. For example, just by saying “this is true” (64) doesn’t always make it true. O’Brian leaves it up to the reader to distinct what they see the story as: reality or fiction. It is said that “a true war story… makes the stomach believe” (74). While Murphy covers a variety of subjects for comparison in his book, I have chosen to look specifically at the military similarities, which Murphy does in chapter two his book, aptly titled The Legions. His article is clear and informative, one problem with the article, as mentioned earlier, is the lack of primary sources. The inclusion of even one reliable primary source would add another level of credibility to his article while, at the same time, enhancing his argument. James Glass' article, Hypothesis: The Holocaust and the Enthusiasts for Murder, argues that instead of the commonly held belief that the average German citizen was simply indifferent to the persecution of the Jews, that he was an active conspirator in the mass extermination and persecution of the Jews (Glass 1997). Glass argues it was impossible for the average German citizen to be indifferent about the Jews as so many average citizens were needed to create, organize, build etc.
