My first visit to Mexico was the best experience I had ever had, and to this date I have never forgotten it. My parents, brother and I decided to take a trip to Mexico for many different reasons. We hadn’t seen our family members that live in Mexico ever since we came to live I the U.S. Last time we were in Mexico was about 11 years ago, so it was time to revisit it. It was also time for a vacation, because we hadn’t been out from Salinas in a very long time. To me visiting the town I was born in was the most important, because I wanted to know where I came from.
The speaker is a father, and he and his daughter are contemplating their view of the valley, but the speaker is primarily addressing the reader. The first section of the poem is primarily descriptive, as Soto depicts the lives of Mexican American farm workers and their families in a hot, dry valley in central California. A road of black asphalt runs through the valley, a road that Soto later uses symbolically as a dividing line between the hard life in the valley and life beyond. “Kids could make it” across, he says, literally meaning that they could “leap barefoot” to the little store where they buy candy and snowcones. Before describing what could be considered the children’s bleak future, Soto reminds the reader that these children are like all children,
“El dia de los muertos.” “El dia de los muertos,” or as we know it in English “the day of the dead,” is a tradition originating in Mexico. This tradition is celebrated every November 1st and 2nd, dating back as far as 3,000 years. The people who celebrate this tradition believe that the veil between the living realm and dead realm is lifted and that they can commune with their deceased friends and relatives. These people also believe that their deceased friends and relatives are insulted if they are mourned on this day, which is the reason that this holiday consists of dancing, eating, and celebrating. The historical roots of “el dia de los muertos” stretch back to pre-hispanic cultures of Mesoamerica, including the Nahua, the Aztecs, the Mayans, the Tolecas, the Tlaxcaltec, the Chichimec, and the Tecpanec.
The main characters of The Littoral Zone are middle-aged. They have already had children, have families and they have established careers based in academia. They live and move between New England towns during the story. The author gives almost no attention to their lives before meeting each other and instead focuses on their period of passion, their period of emotional dissonance and then the aftermath of their decision to be together. Sanchez, on the other hand, tells the story of a Mexican immigrant from the age of 17 and is almost a generational story as it begins with him dropping his son off to be a working man.
Prologue: Yali’s Question In July 1972, Jared Diamond was studying bird evolution in New Guinea, where he met a local Aborigine politician named Yali. Yali asked many questions as they talked about the origins of their ancestors and the evolution of it. A question Yali asks is “why is it you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?” It was a simple question but has inspired Jared Diamond to write this book as he attempts to answer Yali’s question decades later. Jared explains the importance of writing this book with evidence from modern history and societies, he also explains the smarts between us and the Aborigines

. At the age of sixteen her father learned of her reluctance to accept her heritage, and placed into motion a radical plan. Instead of sending her to dance camp in Aspen, he sent her to Mexico. Reluctantly, she did as her father asked and found that he was right. She loved everything about Mexican culture, and returned to the States with a newly found apparition for her Latino roots.
In Dagoberto Gilb’s story “Romero’s Shirt,” Romero’s plaid Pendleton shirt seems like an insignificant object at first, but gains symbolic significance as the story progresses. Juan Romero, a husband and father, was born and raised in Mexico in a family that had close to nothing. After moving to El Paso from Mexico he realized that there wasn’t much available to his family as a child and wanted different for the family he made with his wife. He cherished his plaid Pendleton shirt because to him it was more than a shirt, it was something he could wear anywhere and everywhere and it symbolized all the hard work he had done to make sure his family had a life that they deserved. Romero was an extremely hard worker and did whatever he could to provide for his family.
Mira’s negligence was clear to Mukherjee after she had been driven away from Canada. The state of an immigrant’s preference is as how he chooses his lifestyle. Adapting to a new country simply comes down to the person’s choice. I didn’t really understand let alone care about immigration and the negligence that my parents had to go through when moving to the U.S. Until, I myself visited Mexico. When I visited Mexico one summer, I was very fond of the atmosphere.
