ART-1-42375-F13 The Aguilar Family Flower and Fruit Market Diorama, Collection by Rex May (1969 –late 1980s) Iconic Art collector Rex May, Smallest of Worlds, every day scenes by the Aguilar Family, consist of four dioramas in total. Flower and Fruit Market, is one of the four diorama scenes that reflects the beautiful and colorful Mexican social culture and depicts what any day in Oaxaca, Mexico would look like. The images were created by the Aguilar Family, natives of Oaxaca, Mexico and collected by Rex May who befriended the Aguilar family while on one of his many travels to Mexico. His entire collection of iconic pieces consists of more than 1,400 Peruvian, Brazilian, Nicaraguan and Mexican items. The Aguilar Family collection of original hand crafted pieces were collected by Rex May over a period of more than a decade from 1969 well into the late 1980s during his many trips to Mexico and his growing bond with the Aguilar Family while desiring to learn and appreciate the knowledge of the Mexican culture. Rex May, was born in Texas which is a bordering U.S. State to the country of Mexico. With all its political issues surrounding immigration, it must have been a source for Rex May’s fascination with the Mexican culture. It is noted his fascination began with a childhood relationship of a classmate from the Mexican Culture. While not allowed to explore the Mexican community in his home town as a child, it only increased his curiosity and desire to understand the Mexican culture well into his adulthood. His first visit to Mexico was during World War II while enlisted in the U.S. Army. After moving to California, he opened a Christmas store in San Francisco where he displayed and sold his collections from around the world. His training in set design was instrumental in collecting and displaying items in his store such as the Aguilar Family
