Prologue: Yali’s Question In July 1972, Jared Diamond was studying bird evolution in New Guinea, where he met a local Aborigine politician named Yali. Yali asked many questions as they talked about the origins of their ancestors and the evolution of it. A question Yali asks is “why is it you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?” It was a simple question but has inspired Jared Diamond to write this book as he attempts to answer Yali’s question decades later. First he explains that Apes in Africa broke into several populations: Gorillas, Chimps, and then us Humans. The first human ancestor to spread beyond Africa was the Homo erectus. It was found with fossils discovered in the Java Islands in Southeast Asia (known as the Java man). Half a million years ago Homo erectus skeletons became enlarged, rounder, and less angular. Homo erectus evolved into Homo sapiens and had dramatically smaller brains than us. Jared Diamond also states that there was another type of the same Genus called the Neanderthals. Homo neanderthalensis had brains larger than ours; they left behind strong evidence of burying their dead and caring for their sick, but still had crude stone tools with no recognizable function. Jared Diamond states that Human History “took off” around 50,000 years ago termed “The Great Leap Forward” with evidence of history’s first preserved jewelry. Fully modern skeletons of people termed “The Cro-Magnons” had used tools of bone. Bone was easily shaped into needles, fishhooks, spoons, and most significant; bows and arrows that go along with weapons. They invented weapons, nets and lines for catching food such as fish. The Cro-Magnons somehow used their far superior technology, and brains to infect, kill or displace the Neanderthals leaving no evidence of hybridification or anything between the two. Humans then expanded over the whole continent and adapted to its diverse habitats.
