Television? Does it stimulate the brain and open us up to learning more, or does it narrow our view to the harsh reality of our society’s faults? There are mixed opinions on the effect that TV has on society today. With the variety of shows on television today this debate will be a continuous one. One can say, with so many personalities in the world you have to expect that what one person sees as half full, and another sees it as half empty. One thing I believe most of all is that television is important enough that we can’t live without it, and a lot of us depend on it. Dana Stevens is "Thinking Outside the Idiot Box" is a direct response to Steven Johnson's essay "watching TV makes you Smarter". (p.1) Dana Stevens (2005) said that “She could make no sense of Johnson’s piece” (p.1). She did not really agree with anything besides that watching TV is okay. Just by the name of Stevens article makes her views regarding TV making us smarter very clear, because she refers to TV as “the Idiot Box”. What she wanted to get across is that TV is not a medium to make a person more intelligent. Stevens disagrees with Johnson’s opinion that thinking out the more complex plots of TV shows improves a person’s intellectual abilities. She believes those intertwined plots don’t just induce a person to watch more TV, they also slow the persons thinking process because shows like to overflow a person with quick-paced facts. With the amount of facts that one has to deal with it deters, and hinder a person from setting apart the integrities the show is endorsing because there is no time for the audience to think. Stevens he goes on to say “watching TV teaches you to watch more TV “(Stevens, 2005, p.2), which she backs up by using the show” 24”.
