In “Discrimination at Large” Jennifer A. Coleman explains that obesity is the last preserve for unexplained bigotry. She tells us how overweight people are publicly criticized without remorse on TV, in the news and in cartoons. Coleman goes on to say people who would never think about telling an anti-gay or racial joke have no problem screaming “move your fat ass” when we cross in front of them. Furthermore, she tells us that overweight children are taught that they deserve to be mocked. I found this article to be very eye opening for me and how I deal with the subject of obesity around my children.
There are a number of women who have eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia trying to look like Miss USA when really it just might not be their body type. Women who starve themselves and call themselves fat on a regular basis. Well they would have nothing to compare themselves to if we as a society weren’t constantly flashing slim women on TV or in magazines. I wonder if there was a Mr. America pageant if men would start to doubt their body types and conform to what is socially accepted for a mans body. All in all I was shocked when I read this and think it is very sad that on national television there is a body type this is accepted.
Lastly, the Portia-the beautiful women looking for a Sutter, shows ignorance towards the men who so badly want her love. Ultimately, ignorance leads to dehumanization. To begin, In Act 1 Scene 3, Antonio and Bassanio go to Shylock’s house and ask him for $3000(ducats). Shylock says “Fair sir, you spat on me on Wednesday last, you spurn’d me such a day, another time you call’d me dog: and for these courtesies I’ll lend you thus much monies” (Shakespeare I.iii.121-124). Shylock is now dehumanizing them by taunting them.
I agree with Sheets-Johnstone’s claim that “women inspire male sexual desire simply by existing.” In the twenty first centuries, targeting western culture, women are constantly examined by men based alone on their outward appearance. A woman can be reduced to only to certain body parts such as the genitalia. This is because a woman’s appearance alone can cause a male to become aroused which naturally leads to this kind of degradation. The woman as a whole is basically forgotten. Because it is common for men to behave in this manner, it is almost routine for a woman to be appeasing to a man for approval.

Movies and television shows suggest that all women are airheads, whose sole purpose in life is to please men and rear children. Magazines and other advertisements push photographs of very slender, over groomed and “sexy women” into our minds. Men’s magazines write articles on how to seduce a girl into sleeping with them.
But Daisy was a very picky girl. You can tell when she ignored all of the non wealthy, non classy men that tried to woo her. But then, the rich, handsome, elegant Jay Gatsby introduced himself to her, she couldn't have found a better person. Distracted by the present figure of Gatsby, she didn't love Gatsby, it was the image. For Gatsby, it made him believe that Daisy really fell in love with him.
Junot Diaz first shows stereotyping girls by their skin color when he states, “If she is a white girl you know you would at least get a hand job (178)” This quote is basically saying that white girls are relatively “easy to date” and based on their race you may be able to expect specific sexual favors. In addition he shows more stereotyping by skin color “The white ones are the ones you want the most” implies that they are the preferred race to date although difficult to date due their family dynamic, such as parent approval (179). Later in the story he stereotypes the black girls “the out-of-towners are black, black girls who grew up with ballet and Girl Scouts, who have three cars in their driveways (179).” The quote mentioned is illustrating that no black girls live in this neighborhood and speculates the black girl would need to be a member of a mixed family to have these childhood opportunities. To some extent the narrator shows stereotyping against white males when he states, “Run a hand through your hair like the white boys do even though the only thing that runs easily through your hair is Africa (179)” He is actually stating that girls normally like white guys because of their soft and smooth hair. A friend of mine named Moe, was in a sense overweight and he didn’t like it because of what other people thought about it. Moe was so insecure that he kept saying he didn’t want to look like that anymore and started a diet which cut out a lot of his favorite foods. Beauty is something that is something on the inside and not on the outside according to Drevno. In her article she says “I have friends who starve themselves, or throw up everything they eat, because pop culture tells them they aren’t worthy unless they look perfect”(P.4). As though to put another nail in our coffin, Japanese people have the lowest rate of heart disease and enjoy the longest life expectancy in the world, too. As a nation, they have an average life expectancy of 82.4 years, rising to 86 years for women alone. Just like the great French paradox, Japan's citizens enjoy a healthy outlook that's second to none, and seemingly without shirking on life's pleasures.
Good-looking raters didn't seem to care one way or the other how handsome or beautiful an applicant was, but average-looking raters did - they penalized better-looking same-sex applicants. Its just to be practical, you might want think carefully about your appearance when you interview for a position, depending on who is doing the interviewing. When your potential boss is a member of your own sex, consider a more conservative, professional look. You want your interviewer focused on your credentials, not your good looks. Its been noticed that the younger crowd worries more about their appearance than any other age group.
