Juveniles will produce delinquent behavior because they want attention from peers or seek approval from others their own age. Criminal acts are often considered ‘cool’ and this concept is buried deep in adolescent psyches. Anger or depression. Adolescents that come from broken homes or abusive families are at a higher risk for committing criminal acts. Juveniles will rebel against neglectful or hurtful parents, or commit wrongful acts to earn attention from parents, who otherwise offer a complete lack of parental supervision.
These stereotypes are what some people class teens into automatically without getting to know them and seeing what their capabilities are. This is very dangerous as if stereotypes are give then the person could see it as an excuse for his or her behavior. In reality a person could just be going through a hard time but in the eyes of others they are showing the characteristics of a particular stereotype. In the media today teens are portrayed in a negative manner for example in a lot of soaps like “Home & Away” there is a bad boy theme at times. This is shown through the introduction of the River Boys gang.
Young children can be self conscious they can think, but they don’t think about thinking. Self consciousness is exacerbated by the Imaginary Audience. Teens feel that a group of people are always watching and judging them on everything that they do. When a teen feels like they are getting judge by an audience that doesn’t exist this is called Imaginary audience. Imaginary audience arises from the larger concept of adolescent egocentrism.
A rite as simple as reading rude words out loud can produce a measurable effect. (Group influence on teens) Once we are in a group it starts to shape us through conformity, pulling our attitudes and behavior in line with others, threatening us with ostracism if we dare to rebel and, when facing rival groups, firing our competitive spirit. We try to shape the group as well, by sometimes repeating our opinions. This helps to convince others we are voicing the majority view. Still, people are notoriously resistant to change.
As children move from adolescents to young adulthood they encounter dramatic physical, emotional, and lifestyle changes.The younger that children and adolescents are when they start to drink alcohol are more likely to engage in behaviors that can harm themselves and others. Teens sometimes choose to associate with people who have a bad effect on them such as gang members. In fact, there are three major reasons why teens choose to join gangs: bad family relationships, drug addiction and influence of other teen gangsters. Perhaps the most common reason for teens to join gangs is bad family relationships. For example, some parents have arguments or fights most of the time which cause stress for their children, and sometimes parents don’t give enough time to their children.
Substance abuse is a difficult situation for anyone to deal with, but the problem is compacted when children are involved. Parents who are substance abusers may knowingly or unknowingly be causing a number of problems for their child. Emotional effects that children of substance abusive parents may experience are to blame themselves for their parent’s overall drug or alcohol abuse, thinking that they are not good enough and force their parents to use drugs or alcohol. There is a higher occurrence of depression, anxiety, eating disorders and suicide attempts among children growing up with substance abusive parents compared to children that grow up with parents who do not abuse substances. Specific deterrence, general deterrence, and situational crime prevention are three ways that would help the juvenile change for the better. Choosing the best one can be difficult depending on the juvenile, and the crime committed. There are many things that will lead teens to act in the wrong way. Several teenagers choose to criminal acts because of peer pressure, the lifestyle which grown up in, being around gangs, guardians who lack the responsible duties, etc.
The pressure of being a teen adolescent is vigorous. The pressure may be so intense and vigorous that they find themselves in situations that they may not be able to get themselves out of. Most teens find themselves in those certain situations because of their housing arrangements, or they want to be cool, or even because of the people they associate themselves with. As we identify each teen with to where they come from we find very different crimes that they are associated with. We ask ourselves why adolescents become violent, or associate themselves with negative things or people?
