In today’s society, American teenagers take a lot of things for granted, but what we don’t take into consideration is what would happen if things suddenly disappeared. The life of a teenager consist of school, jobs, driving, friends, sports, partying, and going out with friends. We never consider others’ way of life. In some cultures, they are just fighting to stay alive, while others don’t have the freedom to go out with friend or play a certain sport. They are consumed in family life or their future jobs that they have no social life. No one ever thinks what would happen if their way of life was completely turned around. This concept is shown on a reality television show called 16 and Pregnant. It follows a group of teenage girls throughout their pregnancy and a few weeks after. It shows the trials, worries, and changes in these girls’ lives. In Teen Mom, some of the girls put these things on the back burner. Americans watch television for an escape from reality and to be distracted from the problems that occur in their day to day lives. People in today’s society have very hectic schedules that force them to work for very long hours just to get ends to meet, but sometimes they cannot even do this so they seek an escape. Their escape is television, many people watch a couple of hours of television a day, and what do they watch? They do not watch the news because it is too serious and it will not distract them from the problems in the real world. It is all about the problems in the real world, so they turn to reality television which depicts a life where the people that it is about have much larger problems than anything a regular person has to deal with. When Americans watch reality television they realize that their lives may be bad, but at least it isn’t as bad as those people are depicted in the show.
