Alex Odorico US History 8th Hour There is no doubt that technology had a huge effect on the 19th and 20th centuries. Anybody who says otherwise is either lying, or mad. With so many important, monumental, life-changing inventions taking place during those two centuries, the world would be forever changed. Automobiles and airplanes, light bulbs and locomotives, the can opener and the cotton gin all had their own unique impact on everyday life. These inventions are the cornerstone of American life today, the building blocks that paved the way for a plethora of innovative ideas. One example, and probably the biggest example, of technology affecting us is the automobile. Just try to think of life today without the automobile. It’s quite hard isn’t it? Imagine how difficult the commute to work would be, how hard traveling to school or going to a friend’s house would become. It’s one of those things we take for granted. It has impacted us by making transportation faster and more reliable. It makes us able to cover more miles in less time, and we can travel farther than we used to be able to. When the automobile was invented, it opened up the whole country to ordinary people. Now, just about everyone owns an automobile and just about anyone who doesn’t can obtain one if they needed to. My second example is the airplane. It not only affects the USA, but the whole world. It affects us in the same concept as the automobile but on a much larger scale. For example: going from New York to Germany was virtually impossible before the airplane. Sure, you could take a boat but it’s unpractical and takes way more time. Similar to what I said about the automobile, it opens up the whole world to ordinary people. Just purchase a ticket and hop on. It makes traveling to other countries much more easier and simpler. My last example shall be the light bulb. Even the word itself
