Techniques to Overcoming Denial in Addiction Danielle Walker Southwestern Community College Psychiatric Clinical Rotation Professor Geoff Schroder November 18, 2011 According to “Wikipedia Encyclopedia”, denial is a defense mechanism in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence (“Denial”, no page). The ability to deny is an essential part of what enables an addict to continue his or her behavior even though it is clear that there is a problem. The concept of denial is important in the twelve-step alcohol anonymous program due to the fact that overcoming denial is a critical part of the initial phase. According to the “Recovery Journal”, the first and most crucial step in the twelve-step AA program is admitting you are powerless over alcohol and admitting that your life has become unmanageable (pg. 1). Letting go of the denial and admitting that there is a problem, obtaining a solid support system, and commitment is key to successfully conquering denial and ultimately addiction. Overcoming denial and admitting there is a problem can be more difficult than it sounds. According to the article “How to let go of Addictions” (2008), continuing to live in denial will only deplete your mind, body, and soul of energy and the realities of life. One has to learn to let go of the need to deny by allowing oneself to become safe and strong enough to cope with the truth (“Addictions,” 2008). This can only be done when the time is right for that particular individual in order to achieve a breakthrough. Letting go of everything and surrendering to change is the only way to break though the barrier and get clean and sober.
