According to the Humane Society of the United States, there are between six and eight million dogs and cats rescued each year. There are at least that many more domestic animals rescued each year. There are many reasons that animals may need to be rescued and often they are rescued from situations involving abuse, neglect, or both. Animal cruelty can be either deliberate abuse or simply the failure to take care of an animal (The Humane Society of the United States, 2012). Many rescued animals need to be rehabilitated because of mental or physical injuries before they can be put up for adoption to new families. It is the responsibility of the people of our great nation to help reduce the amount of animals in need of rescue and rehabilitation. Education may help reduce the amount of animals in need of rescue and rehabilitation each year which will help save the lives of these animals. Education is important for reducing the amount of animals in need of rescue. People need to be educated so that the number of unwanted animals will stop growing. Reducing the amount of animals people are breeding or are allowed to breed uncontrollably will help decrease the amount of animals needing rescued. One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in a span of 6 years, one female cat and her offspring can produce 20,736 in a span of 4 years, and feral female cats can potentially have 5 litters of kittens in a year (The National Animal Cruelty Registry, 2012). It is the nature of animals to breed uncontrollably so educating people on how to develop a plan or breeding schedule can help reduce the amount of unwanted animals. The best way to prevent unwanted or abused animals is to take away the ability for them to breed. Spay and neuter is a sensible and very efficient way to reduce the amount of unwanted animals.
