Metro Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization funded by the City of Tuscaloosa, the City of Northport, and the Tuscaloosa County Commission that opened in July 1994. All animals, regardless of their age, are taken in by us. There are 8,000 animals taken in each year, and adopted out around 1,200 each year. We do in-house spay and neuter surgery on most of our shelter animals before they are adopted. All animals over 6 months are microchipped. We are proud to be a member of the Humane Society of the United States as well as the American Humane Association, the Alabama Humane Federation, and the Alabama Animal Control Association. Here is a quick list covering what you will need to bring and do in order to take the pet of your dreams: * Everyone must fill out an application. * Sign contract agreeing to take over responsibility for animal’s care. * Most animals are available to go home on the same day assuming requirements are met. * You may be required to bring your children or other dogs in your home to meet the prospective dog or cat before we approve the adoption. This policy also applies to a roommate situation. * Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter cannot hold animals for more than 24 hours for people. This may be done with a $35 deposit. * Once an animal is chosen it generally takes 30-45 minutes to compete the adoption * Remember that for the well-being of all pets in our care, we reserve the rights to refuse adoption to anyone who does not meet our adoption requirements.
