Name Teacher English 11 February 2013 “Sweatshop Oppression” In the article, “Sweatshop Oppression,” Rajeev Ravisankar states an argument against sweatshops and how unfair of an environment it is. His purpose is to point out problems in the work place many of us may not realize. He identifies the high human cost it takes to achieve lower and lower prices. He describes in is argument how the people work in awful conditions and their grueling hours working for such a small pay. The author’s purpose is to open the eyes of the reader and get the reader’s attention on just how awful sweatshops really are. Ravisankar address his fellow college students throughout his argument and labels himself as one of them by stating, “Being the poor college student we are.” His perspective is more accepting with his friendly attitude and his details serve important purpose. Ravisankar uses emotional appeal to suggest sympathy. His appeal to logic is used to the readers to suggest whey sweatshop labor shouldn’t be used. The author goes into detail arguing against long hours, unhealthy environments in the work place, discrimination, terrible temperatures and the little salary. By going into detail within these categories he shows sympathy emotionally. Ravisankar pushes his point in reasoning by pointing out moral responsibility so the workers receive fair compensation and a cleaner working environment. He describes America’s obsession with a great bargain which leads to wide spread use of cheap labor. He refutes the argument by saying the companies such as: Nike, Reebok, Gap and such are the blame for seeking to get as much out of workers for the least possible price describing “The race to the bottom.” He presents a strong argument. To make the argument better, Ravisankar should have added more details when making his point on the unfair treatments of workers. He also
