Sunday Dinners Our family has a tradition we’ve practiced for four generations. It’s called Sunday Dinner, yes there have been movies about Sunday dinners where you see African American families gathered around a table with the most delicious, and beautifully prepared foods you can imagine. Our Sunday dinners are very similar but there’s a bit of a twist that you’ll learn about later in the story. Our family Sunday dinners have changed over the years but still serve the same purpose which is to provide a permanent time for the family to come together and share, rejoice, regroup, and regain our sanity for the coming week. It’s a cherished time for us so every one takes the opportunity seriously. In the past few years the dinners have changed a bit, and have taken a much healthier appearance. We no longer have heavy meals that resemble a Thanksgiving Feast. We’ve all decided that our gatherings should not only be healthy for the soul but healthy for the body as well. Our traditional dishes of pot roast, mashed potatoes drizzled with gravy, corn on the cob dripping with butter, home made rolls, tossed green salad, peach cobbler, and lemon meringue pie have been scaled down quite a bit. We would usually decide on the following Sunday’s menu, and then decide on which family would prepare each dish. There are a total of seven families ranging in size from four to eight or nine so every one preparing food is responsible to prepare enough for everyone to have seconds of anything they choose, so we’re talking about a lot of food, and a whole lot of elbow grease! No one ever complains, at least not outside of their own kitchen, because we share bragging rights on the food we always put forth our very best effort.
