The Inside View of Hotel California “Hotel California”, written by The Eagles, was released as a single in February 1977. It had sold more than 16 million copies in the United States alone. “Hotel California” mesmerizes people with its gentle guitar riffs by Don Felder and the soft and smooth vocals by Don Henley. This song can be interpreted in many different ways and there are many rumors out there about what the song really means. I can only explain the way I understand the song and try to best explain it to you. The song begins: On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim I had to stop for the night The introduction seems to formulate the illustration about a man making his way down a desert highway at night with the cool breeze blowing through his hair. He smells the scent of “colitis”, a Spanish word for cannabis, rising up through the air. He sees a light in the distance, but his head grew heavy and his sight became faint, therefore causing him to have to stop and rest at this “shimmering light”. The beginning lyrics suggest drugs are involved and cause this man to have to stop. Continuing on to finish the first stanza: There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell And I was thinking to myself, ’this could be heaven or this could be hell’ Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say... Welcome to the hotel California Such a lovely place Such a lovely face Plenty of room at the hotel California Any time of year, you can find it here To continue, the man walks into the building, seeing a women standing in the doorway. He hears the mission bells sound and wonders if he is in heaven or hell. This may refer
