This essay aims to give an account of the study skills that maximize academic potential. In order for students to be better learners and be successful in higher education, they need to practise study skills that will encourage learning (Roberts, 2004). Through developing these metacognitive strategies will ensure students learn effectively and enjoy their studies (Rawlins, 1996). Roberts argues that good time management, concentration and memory, and learning styles, “are crucial to developing good study habits”, (2004, p1). To develop good time management, students need to list all their commitments, schedule for each activity and prioritize accordingly. These priorities will be different in each student and so will their learning styles. People’s styles have been suggested as, “the automatic way they respond to information and situations”, (Riding, 1996, p5). Memory and concentration’s importance is in recalling information; however sufficiency is added when it’s coupled with listening and understanding (Roberts, 2004). Some knowledge skills students should develop include critical thinking, writing, reading, reflective and evaluating skills. These help in the study and production of informative, persuasive and logical academic work (Roberts, 2004). In addition students are enriched as they learn from their mistakes and show evidence of their learning (Rawlins, 1996). Students are also encouraged to learn collaboratively through study groups and seminars. Through these students gain invaluable information on their subject plus develop good communication skills (Rawlins, 1996). In support of all these skills, are the resources students have at their disposal, which include libraries, laboratories, tutor support and learning media (Astin, 1999).
