Justin Florio Threats Starbucks is a large company with a competitive advantage that is shrinking because of its huge success. This is because Starbucks model has been copied successfully by its competitors, and this poses a serious threat to the company. If Starbucks cannot retain its differentiator strategy, it is doomed to fall out of popularity, as it would end up being a store that is selling nothing more than the same cup of coffee as everyone else. Starbucks' success has led to the market entry of many competitors and copycat brands that could pose potential threats (Caribou Coffee, Seattle’s Best). This includes other already reputable companies putting out the same/similar products (such as McDonald’s with McCafe’s). How the company chooses to combat these threats will determine their success in the future. Other companies can undercut Starbucks’ products as well as their services and strategies. This can include opening earlier, lowering prices, variety of products, services provided, advertising, location, and customer service. I would say each of these aspects is important in its own way, but customer service, location, and services provided are potentially some of the most important aspects of a successful business. Constant interaction with customers requires diligence and care. Being located conveniently is huge for grabbing new clientele. Finally, the extra reasons to go to Starbucks and buy that five dollar cup of coffee are huge in appeal. Starbucks is exposed to rises in the cost of coffee and dairy products as well as any other product they choose to sell. This year, the harvest of coffee was lackluster at best. This caused an increase in price of all coffee products throughout America. Not only this, but the prices of other items which complement their custom coffee products have increased as well.
