Ancient History By Sarah Buchanan Throughout history no other army has received as much attention as the Spartans. This formidable force held the mighty Persian army, with numbers so great that they drank rivers dry, off for 3 days until they were betrayed by a medizer (Greek traitor). Their brute strength, superior tactics and courage has ensured that Sparta’s reputation as a superior fighting force has dominated the history pages due to their sole focus on this pursuit. To fully understand this military focus and why this achieved acclaimed success, it is essential to explore their military training, and weapons, their involvement in the Persian wars, and finally the Peloponnesian war. This was a culture that achieved supremacy due to unyielding determination and greeted death on the battlefield with honour. Welcome to tonight’s episode of ‘Ancient Civilizations’, and yes indeed, I will be discussing the Spartan Military system. The sole priority of the Spartan military was their training and weapons. For the Spartan male their training began before they were born. They married the strongest boys with the strongest girls and the fastest boys with the fastest girls in order to bread the best warriors. Infamously, the Spartan elders would inspect all new born infants and any found to be imperfect, judged to be puny or deformed, were thrown from Mount Taygetos which is known as “The Deposits”. The soon to be Spartan warriors were taken from their home, around the age of six or seven, depending on the source, to attend the Agoge until the age of 18. They were subject to harsh training and discipline. Historical accounts tell of Spartan boys being allowed no shoes, very few garments, and being taught to take pride in enduring pain and hardship.
