Examine the reasons why girls outperform boys in most subjects and at most levels of the education system There are many factors which suggest why there is such a large gender gap in attainment within the education system, many external and internal aspects have helped draw a conclusion of why girls seem to achieve better at school than their fellow boys. However, we can not ignore that there are others factors to consider when looking at a childs attainment in school such as; ethnicity and social class. Trends show that girls tend to achieve on average higher than boys until their last year at univerity. At GCSE's, statistic show that although both genders are achieving more than five GCSE's between an A* to C grade each year, there is still a large gap between girls abd boys attainment, which is seen to be widening from a 3% gap in 1985 to a 10% gap in 2006. Some may argue that although there is a statistical gap between girls and boys in the education system, it is not the most important factor contributing to a childs attainment. Many sociologists suggest that the gender differences in achievement, especially the rapid improvement of girls grades is best explained through external factors. Many see the rise of feminism has had a large impact on the education system and the gender gap in attainment. Feminism is a social movement that strieves for equal rights for women in all areas of life. They have fought against the traditional stereotype of women as housewife. Athough it is argued that women are still not completely equal, it has broadly widen womens expectations and self esteem. McRobbie highlights how the representation of women has changed through the comparring girls magazines from the 1970's to 1990's. McRobbie's emphasises the shift from representing the importance of getting married and secure, to now, where images show independant, 'stand alone'
