Society and Culture AP1 Definitions SEE ATTACHED SHEET ENTITLED CONCEPTS PAGE 10 Core Concepts of Society and Culture Society: refers to the way people organise themselves. When inks such as institutions, media, networks and sporting organisations are in place, people are joined in society. Culture: refers to the values, arts, technology, laws and beliefs that being a society together. E.g. artwork, language, literature, tattoos and religions. An example of a strong sense of share culture is the US reaction to 9/11 showing strong patriotism. Persons: refers to individuals who are shaped by their society and culture. We are all examples of person interacting in some way without society. Environment: refers to the physical setting of a society as el as the social and psychological environment. Time: time is a constant in all societies and cultures, measured as past, present and future. Power: involves a capacity to influence others to follow a course of action or point of new they would not otherwise follow. Authority: sort of subtype power. Authority implies a legitimate use of influence and/or persuasion. Difference between power and authority is that someone in authority has accepted the right to make decisions whereas someone in power would make decision regardless of what those affected would think. Gender: refers to the socially constructed difference between men and women. The difference between the value society places on their physical and biological differences. Theories of personal and social development PIAGET: Jean Piaget developed his theory on the process of intellectual development. He believed there were four major stages in an individual’s development where there was a major change in the person’s ability to know and perceive things.
